'95 mercury 90hp needs a power head, fuel line, and water pump. Quoted a price of about $4100. Should I get remanufactured power head or get a used/new motor? I have a 21' pontoon boat that is in great shape for its age. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your motor, I would look into a new one, the price might be higher but you will have a new lower unit as well. Many of the new motors will get better fuel consumption rates too and if you use your boat a lot it might just be worth the extra 2k over the long run. Also see if you can get more than one estimate I know the power head is expensive but the water impeller and fuel lines shouldn't take more than 45 minutes to do and the parts are under 75 dollars to do both. good luck.

I had a 3 stroke. Would yall go with a 2 stroke or 4 and how much is it to take off and mount a motor on a boat?

Re: Need advice

You would only have either a 2 stroke (mix gas with oil) or a 4 stroke. 2 strokes are cheaper to maintain and are a bit faster off the line, but on the other hand are not too good for the environment. The merc Verono is suposed to be a "green" 2 stroke though. 4 strokes maybe the best for the pontoon though(bit longer engine life). The only draw back is they are more costly and you maintain them like you would a car engine (they need oil changes after so many hours) and you may have to replace your gas tank or clean it out very well. Go to http://www.mercurymarine.com/engines/index.php

and you can look at some of the new motors available and where you can get them. it is also a good place to compare 2 and 4 strokes. As far as the cost to replace it should not be more than 5 or so hours of labor. Oh and just for fun you can go to the parts and accessories and look up your power head and find a price for it all you need is the engine model number. Good luck.

I think that price is very high. I would look into a used motor. If you stay with the same make and a close year, all the wiring and control lines and cables with fit easily.

Is that 90HP motor enough for that 'toon? I bought a '93 Merc 135HPV6 for a grand last year. It is superb.

Re: Need advice

my mistake...3 cylinder 2 stroke. I'll get another estimate. I looked into remanufactured powerheads for this motor and they run around $2000. I found a new 90 2 stroke for $5400.

It's rated for a 90. I can pull a tube/knee board. Mostly its used for cruising up and down the creek and fishing Matagorda Bay Tx. I'll see if I can find a used motor and compare the prices.
