I could probably figure this out by myself... But I thought I would ask the experts just in case someone has experienced this problem before. 2002 Merc 350 Mag MPI horizon / Bravo 1 leg... Last night after a full day on the water the serpentine belt came off, After closer inspection I discovered that the pully on the water pump had moved forward pulling the belt out of alighnment with the rest of the pullys. I also noticed there was water leaking from the water pump. I was able to kick the pully back into alignment and re-install the belt (which was now very loose) I was able to limp 2 hours back to the dock stopping 3 times to re-install the belt and let the engine cool down due to over heating. It was dark when this all happend so I haven't had a chance to really look at everything (stuck in the office now) Does any one know why the water pump pully would move forward out of alignment with the rest? Also my Volts dropped while making my way back home so I assume the alternator was not charging the system up. I assume the water pump is also shot?

Re: Need Advice...

Is this boat used in saltwater and is it raw water cooled? How many hrs on this boat? seems to be a rather quick failure of the waterpump, unless the motor has never been flushed out.
yes the water pump is shot ,impeller inside problably spun on the shaft and destroyed the seal on the front. let us know what you find inside the pump.

Rich

Wellcraft 89, Yes it is used in salt water, 200 hours on the motor and it is fresh water cooled. This particular motor has a manual flushing system (air actuated)that I use regularly.

Which water pump are you refering to? The Circulation pump, or the Raw water pump? If it's the circ pump, I'd bet that the bearings are shot. If you can wiggle the pulley in and out or side to side, it's done.

Scott.

Re: Need Advice...

Figured it out... it was the raw water pump. Completely shot. Good thing I opted for the extended warrentee so the new pump was covered, but I decided to pull the old one and install the new one myself rather than have the dealership do the labor. I am new to boating and want to learn to do as much myself as possible. Note to other Newbies... this was an easy project so don't fear doing things yourself.

Cheers :)
