My seloc wiring diagram for the stator wires going to the switch boxes shows the plain red and blue wires going to the bottom box and the ones with the white stripes to the top box. My boat has them reversed, the plain wires to the upper box and the wires with the white tracers going to the bottom box. This boat is new to me so I assume that it has been this way for a long time. It has been taking out rectifiers.... Should I change the wires around or leave them alone? Can someone check a factory manual and see if maybe my manual is wrong?

Oh, this is on a 1982 115 I6

Thanks

Throw the seloc manual away, factory manual is online

So.....what does the factory manual say? or...do you have a link to the "factory manual online" so I can look it up myself?

That's kind of why I stated that I was in need of an expert on the Tower of Power ignition systems - someone who had worked on enough of these that would know whether the manual is right or the way that the motor is wired is right or if it matters. This manual covers a lot of different motors and I have already found a couple of things that aren't exactly correct. And sometimes when you ask a question like this you get answers that well......let's just say may be unreliable. I appreciate any help but if I trust information that is incorrect it could be very costly. I know how distributor ignitions create the firing order and I understand HEI ignitions but I'm not savvy as to how these motors create their firing order. I know it is done between the trigger coil it the stator and then through the switch boxes to the coils but the exact details still elude me.

Well I changed the red and blue wires around to match the wiring diagram. All of the trigger wires and all of the coil wires matched the diagram so I suspected that the stator wires were reversed.

Does anyone know what this would cause the motor to act like? It did run fair at times ( had gas issues as well) actually running up to 5000RPMs for awhile. But it never seemed like it had the power it should, it just never seemed right.

I haven't run it yet with the wires attached according to the manual. Will I be safe to try this? Or is there potential for serious damage?

Thanks guys!

The stator has THREE sets of windings.

Battery charging which both ends of the windings are yellow.

Low speed one end is solid color, the other end same color but striped.

High speed one end is solid color the other end same color but striped.

I never remember which color is low/high. It makes no difference which pair is top/bottom as long as both colors match to one switchbox.

Failure to reach RPM can be caused by most anything, most common is faulty carbs, dirty, poor adjustments.

But always check for spark on each cyl and even compression on all cyls. When these two check out you can be pretty sure all your problems are fueling.

When all else fails, remove the rectifier and test the diodes. Many times a high speed problem has been caused by a faulty rectifier leaving an erroneous magnetic field in the stator, impairing high speed coil voltage production. A simple test on the water is just unplug the yellows to the rectifier and test run for RPM.
