ok.. NEED... WANT... what's the difference...

I want to change my pointes over to HEI..
'82 Celebrity with OMC 5.0L Chevy 305 motor

I called Summit Racing, a Mallery is $309.95 and MSD is $319.95

Both of these are a bit out of my budget.
Anyone know of a place I can get a lil cheaper setup? I'm fine with one from a boat salvage as long as it has a DOA warranty.

Just a bummer cause you can pick up used HEI units for auto use for -$50... but put that word "marine" on it and wow that price jumps up just for being sealed.

You may want to check out www.pertronix.com. You can convert your points system to an electronic by changing out the breaker plate and bypassing the Ballst resistor/wire. I gust put one in my Mercruiser and am very happy with it. A standard kit is about $70, the high end modem is $100 and a matching coil if you want that is ~$40. Takes less than 30 minutes to install. I advide new wires and cap , esp. if you do their coil since it is 40k volts. I think some of the sellers in teh Marine Mega-Mall here carry them under the sierra brand. You can also get a good price on them at www.vintageperformance.com.

FWIW, I have an odd Prestolite distro with a mechanical only qadvance. This conversion made my 302 Ford idle so much better. I am anxious to try it under load Saturday.

Almost forgot, be careful if your OMC has the typical shift-interrupt. Conversion kits will work, but you need a couple dollars worth of parts from your favorite supplier like Radio Shack. It looks easy to set up and the instructions are in the kits.
