Alright fellows i just pick up some oil from wally world. It is the lower unit gear oil that walmart makes sae 80W-90. They were out of the quicksilver type. My question is will this hurt my gears running walmart brand lower unit gear oil in them????? Please inform me ASAP bc i am about to go change it out!!!!:confused:

- In my opinion walmart oil to quicksilver oil is like levi jeans to express jeans. THey are made out of the same material it just has a more popular name! However, i need conformation on this issue b4 i do it!!

If it is the 80 90 gear oil, it will have the additives to protect the lu if you have water intrusion. It is fine, I dont personally use it, but have never heard of any problems. Be sure to replace the washers on the drain and vent screw at the same time.

I guess the obviously answer is that its fine. However, you didn't say what motor/LU you were putting it in. If it normally takes 80W90 Quicksilver oil (don't know if that even exists) then you are fine and probably saved some money.

I have a 1980 25 hp Johnson and water has leaked in the lower unit for atleast 15 years. I just changed it 2-3 times a season.
I finally got around to installing a seal kit on the lower unit the other day. When I opened it up there was a small magnet inside the case. There was not a single metal fragment on it. The gears looked like new. If an oil and water mix didn't hurt my lower unit then Wal Mart oil is not going to hurt yours.
I have also ran and mixed different brands of twc-3 2-stroke oil for years as well without a problem.
It all works. Boaters/Fisherman are just too anal when it comes to their outboards.

In the small marine section of my local wallymarts (at least 3 of the 50 or so within a half mile) they stock a supertech 80w-90 gear oil that doesn't have the word "marine" anywhere on the container. Over with the automotive oils, they have a "lower unit lube" that specifically claims to be made for outboards & stern drives. That's the one I use.

Interestingly, the pennzoil semi-synth TCW-3 in gallon jugs is in the marine aisle along with super-tech by the pint. But super-tech tcw-3 by the gallon is over in automotive. Go figure.

Pre-mixing with different two-stroke oils is one thing; mixing different types of oils in a reservoir is another thing altogether especially when you start talkin bout different synth blends.
