Re: Need Better Acceleration

Hey hwsiii:

I gave you some bad info before... my gear ratio is actually 1.65:1... that will change things a bit, huh?

Sorry about that...

Re: Need Better Acceleration

Yes Dave that would matter. LOL
If that white stuff is greasy it is probably lithium white grease so they could get the prop off easier.
How much seafoam did you use and how did you use it.
I will rerun the numbers LOL

Re: Need Better Acceleration

Your run on might be caused by the idle being set to high. I had a volvo motor that would do that if I had the idle too high. Make sure that the flapper(don't know real term) is completely closed when it is idling. Not sure how to adjust on that motor, but shouldnt be too hard.

Re: Need Better Acceleration

Run on or dieseling is caused by:

High idle speed

Improper ignition timing @ idle

Incorrect air/fuel ratio @ idle

Carbon deposits in the combustion chamber that are glowing red due to a combination of the above. If the engine has sat for a long time, I would recommend a SeaFoam treatment to decarbon the engine.

The really bad thing about dieseling, if you watch the engine, is that sometimes the engine is actually running backwards which causes the oil pump to turn in the wrong direction (so it is actually pumping oil out of the engine instead of into the engine where it is sorely needed). It can cause all kinds of havoc if not corrected...

Re: Need Better Acceleration

Hey - thanks for all the tips!

I think you have nailed it - I think it's in the carburetor... I think the butterfly thingy isn't working at all...

I don't allow it to run-on ... if I turn it off and it doesn't stop, I turn the key back on immediately and let it run again... until I do it and it totally stops...

And yes, H - that stuff is white grease... The SeaFoam I poured into the gas tank, per the instructions on the can...

I went to a marine shop today to pick up the impeller kit and some gear oil and the owner there (who has been servicing boats since the mid-70's) suggested a 17P prop for what I want to do...

Unless you tell me different H, based on your calcs, I think that's the way I'll go...

Dave if you buy the 17" pitch get a 4 blade prop, because I believe that will turn too many RPM. Just watch the tach when you are lightly loaded, because I believe you will overrev. Just watch the tach and everything will be fine.

Thanks for the tip H... so the 4-blade is a better choice? What is the reasoning behind that? Just trying to learn...

Re: Need Better Acceleration

Dave here is my reasoning, you are turning 4,100 RPM right now with the 19" pitch and that is with your normal load on board. When you drop to a 17"pitch you are going to gain about 450 RPM and that puts you at about 4,650 RPM with your normal load. So that means when there is only 1 person on the boat you will gain another 200 to 300 RPM and that would put you about 4,850 RPM or so.

Prop Change

DavemoorePropChange.jpg

By buying a 4 blade prop your RPM will drop about 200 RPM to about 4,650 with one person because of the fourth blade. Going to a 17" pitch prop will increase your hole shot and acceleration a lot, but by getting a 4 blade prop it will increase it even more, and it should bring your prop slip down as well, which will help keep your speed up to where it is now. Your prop slip right now is at 15% and with the fourth blade we should be able to drop this even lower. That is why I recommend you getting a 4 blade aluminum prop, here at Iboats they are very cheap.

Prop Slip

DavemoorePropSlip.jpg

Those numbers are not exact, as part of this is an ART and not science, when you change props in the same pitch and the same make and model you will find differences in RPM, because the props come from the manufacturer a little bit different from each other, and when you change between different models of props even in the same pitch RPM can change. That is why people who want the last little bit of speed out of their props send them to a lab to have them set the props so they are pitched exactly right the whole length of the prop, and sometimes they even thin the blades as well as other fine tuning.

Hope that explains my recommendations to you Dave.

Re: Need Better Acceleration

Awesome! Thanks so much H for the information... this has been a great learning experience too!

I will order the 4-blade 14x17, and OF COURSE I will post the results after I install it and we take her out...

Have a GREAT day! :)

You too Dave, you will be very happy with the results when you use the prop.
