Re: need boat opinion

If it is in good condition (boat, motor and trailer), the price seems fair. The condition of the outboard will be the primary factor in the price of this package. Take a good look at everything and, if you can, see if the owner will put in the water for a test run.

The owner said that we could take it out. Is that to much motor for the boat? Thanks Randy

Absolutly not, it's probably rated for a 140-150! If it performs well with two people in it, Hole shot and a reasonable top speed, around 45 MPH go fo it!

It looks like it has an aluminum hull. If so, 100hp is probably close to its max. If the engine is in good shape, that boat should move along quite nicely with that engine.

Good luck.

Re: need boat opinion

check the rating placard on the boat. 100 seems like a lot of motor for that boat. i had a 90 on a 18 similar. and it was over powered.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.
boat motor combo, A 30 year old may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

Re: need boat opinion

Mine is forsale i will not allow mechanic to look at it or water test but thats just me. I say if its a good price on a nice boat just buy it lol. The alum 17-20ft boats with full windsheilds seem to hold there value better than open cockpits. Around my part of the world book value means nothing on these in $15k and under. That motor is over kill for that boat, my starcraft fishmaster is rated up to 120 hp i doubt thats half mine.

TD, couldn't agree more. I'd walk and tell other's to walk as well. I like those ads that say come look and lake test and bring your mechanic with you. Those are the folks that don't have anything to hide, or the apperance of such, and want you to know what you are buying.

Agreed.... especially after the hell I went through buying my last boat on my own. Next time I'm bringing a good mechanic and lake testing... or no deal.

Say what????

After you agreed to buy the boat he complained about how much gas you used??? dude.... wtf?

I would've probably said "well... if you're gonna be a jerk about it...."

Actually... no.. I wouldn't have. lol.. I'd probably be too in love with the boat, but still given him some sort of hard time about his whining.
