I have a 1996 2hp johnson that sat for a few years without use; thoroughly cleaned carb numerous times, installed new rebuild kit, still will not run without constant choke, and even then I have to constantly balance choke with the throttle. I borrowed a friends carb and it runs fine with it, but cannot see anything wrong with this simple carburetor. I would replace it but it is unavailable, plus can't see what a new one would have that the rebuild kit did not contain. Any suggestions from some smarter or more experienced folks?

blast it!my manual does not go to 96 so im extremely hesitant to give you any numbers atall but id check the float level and make sure its within specs.did you replace the float or are you using the old one?verify that if your using the old one its not taking on gas as they can get a pinhole over time.sorry i cant help further but im sure somebody else will chime in eventually.

Carb sounds like its dirty still, no adjustments on this bad boy. Thoroughly cleaned means what, everyones definition is different.

Thanks for the responses. There are no jet adjustments. By "thoroughly" cleaned I mean soaked for 20 minutes, next time 2 hrs. next time overnight, in Gunk carb cleaner then rinse with water plus spraying orifices with spray carb/throttle body cleaner and blowing out with compressed air.

re: float, I used a new one as part of the rebuild kit and when I remove the carb for more cleaning etc. the bowl contains gas, can it be too full? I did not perform any adjustments to the float level.

if there are no air fuel adjustments then id look closely at the float, not properly set up can cause lots of grief.

check all gaskets and for cracks in the carb, also if it has a needle valve and seat that could be it!

Try setting the float parallel with the carb body while flipped upside down. There are tiny holes just on the inside of the carb throat (at least on most carbs) this one is an oddball, do those holes exist? I suspect not as I dont see welch plugs. Something has to allow for idle.

20 and 2 hrs may have done nothing, once varnish gets in it really plugs stuff up. I had to soak a carb 3 times over night to get it clean, don't no if gunk is good enough either. Opinions?

ive used motomaster tool and parts cleaner and it cleans the carb in about 2 seconds!its a spray cleaner and since ive never had a carb problem it must work, lol.disassembled it blasts the varnish right off!not sure what the same would be in the states?getting back to the motor if you positive its clean go from step 1 and work down.1 fuel(proper mixture) 2 is the tank clean?3 is the fuel getting to the carb properly?4 and i know im sounding like a broken record make sure your float level is properly adjusted, did your carb kit come with a float level adjustment gauge?check your float drop .for an example on a 2hp colt junior (73-77)the drop is between 1 1/8 and 1 1/2 inch.float drop is the distance between the bottom of the carb body and the bottom of the float at the lowest point .also does this motor have any kind of fuel filter that my be plugged?

Re: need carburetor help from someone smarter than I

You tell us that when you put your friends carb on your motor it runs fine? If that is true, you've narrowed your work down. If yours runs with choke on you are starved for fuel. DUH eh? Well it does tell us something.

Spray carb cleaner in the passages after it soaked in a good quality cleaner over night, blow it out with compressed air, install new parts, set up the float levels including the drop. Next assure a good fuel system is working ie: the pickup tube is clean and set as per spec in the idle tube. Blowing air across the pickup tube will draw fuel (or it should...) Go back to carb 101 and recall your basic carb functions... You don't need a manual for that but for setting it up correctly you may.

Good luck.... :)

Re: need carburetor help from someone smarter than I

thanks for all your lessons on carburetor hygiene; after about 48 hours in the carb cleaner with agitation whenever I thought of it, reassembled and now all working as it should. again, thanks.
