hello ,
I am trying to build a new duck mudboat, I am on a very limited budget. A freind gave me a engine 6cyl 1983 cadillac, boat hull will be .125 Alum and will use a surface drive type system the problem I have run into is I need a marine transmission (was told I can't use a car transmission) also need a through hull for the drive shaft where could I find a CHEAP used marine transmission?

Do you have any idea on what gear ratio you need?..

woah.. wait.. "engine 6cyl 1983 cadillac"

That's going to be tuff finding a bellhousing for that one.. There's some other issues too.. For example, If you plan on having the engine enclosed in a box, the starter, alternator, carburetor, and whatever else i'm forgeting, all need to meet marine specs...

Your project sounds interesting and alot of fun but IMHO, you might want to re-think the plan a bit..

ps. check out this dude's mud boat...
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=009257#000001

Re: need cheap velvet drive or zf tranny

Snapper,
That is the exact type of boat I am building with the exception of being on a budget:) unlike steve i was going to set up with two jetski motors bt steve convinced me to go with a bigger auto engine when this cadillac motor (actual the whole car) was donated to me by a friends father. if the velvet drives will bolt up to a chevy they should fit this cadilliac motor if not I could fabrecate a adepter plate for that.

The reducetion yes I have thought of that. I had orginally talked to teh fellow who build steves about my jetski moor rig he suggested a 4:1 and steve with a 383 runs a 1:1 so i fiured with the smaller 6 cyl a 2:1 would be prefect maybe even a 2.5:1 but a 1:1 or 1.5:1 or 1.75:1 would work also the ratio will determan what size prop I will be able to swing and it all comes back down to cost and what I can find. if I could find someone that has a old junked or wrecked skiboat or something simular that I could get the tranny form very reasonable that would help me out allot since this tranny was not in my origanal boat budget and I would just work with what ever reduction it had, if I have to buy a new one it will cost more then the rest of the boat all toghter.

having the engine enclosed in a box, yes I have concidered these issues carefully. The box is not as closed as a normal inboard motor there will be allot of Air circulation in the box (at least on mine) not unlike a car under a closed hood. agian for cost reason the hood may not even go on for some time as it is cosmetic and not required for operation of the boat

I thing you better look into inboard engines a bit more. You have flex plate, stuffing block for your shaft and one for your rudder too!Different carb, exhaust maninfold, fuel pump.A car engine has a different cam in it,frezze plugs, motor mounts ect. There is more to it than just the looks.
Shop ebay for alot of used parts, theres a bunch there at a 1/4 price.

Yes I understand the difference between a auto motor and a marine motor I have had several closed in inboard. considering the application this is being used in this motor will work fine, the auto motor in lightr weight also which is a big issue in what the boat will be used for. motor mount etc.. all have to be fabericated as I build the hull to match what ever engine I use

This thing does not have a rudder as your thinking the control comes form the surface drive unit, the skag on the bottom part of the unit is basiclly your rudder

Nope no jet runs either a outboard type prop or a mud motor type depend on conditions and your desire. I don't know how to post pictures on this site bt if you look at the link in the earlier post there are some pictures of his boat that you can get a better idea. it is kinda a hybrid thing between a inboard and a Mud motor and some of the anderson race boat drives all mixed into one package to make my duckhunting a joyfully event

Will you be using this boat in saltwater? Is the motor FWC?If not,you will need to change the head gaskets over to marine, with a few others.Cool boat anyway.I can see why the cutless bearing was burnning out.Sand! If he was to drill a few holes thru the housen and bearing, more water would flow thru, washing out the sand.

I will run the boat both in salt and fresh water I'm not sure what your abrveation FWC is. ya with the type of areas these boats will go you have to expect some wear and tear as part of the deal. I used to be near a river like that but where I hunt now I will not be in as much sand as swamp mud. I think he is just trying to tweak all the little stuff on his right now to get the most out of everything.
I may have found a marine tranny fellower has a power slot out of a fresh water master ski boat

Sorry I am a little slow on the abbrevation stuff :)yep fresh water cool on a closed system. I can't use a intake like allot of inboards becuase of the area these boats run ......mud ,weeds, hydria, sticks, logs, stumps well you get the idea

Some of the mud boats I have seen here use extra fan blowers on the motor to help cool the motor even thought they are FWC.Still a cool boat, haven't seen one here in Lousiana.Where did the one in the pic's come from.
Have you ever look into a go devil?

Yes I see the go devils and mud buddys all the time there is a couple things about them i don't like

one is there slow and they require you to stand with my bad leg that is not possiable all the time there motors alos sit up above the hull of the boat.

The other guy that boat was pictured is out in CA he bought his form the only commerical builder I know of that is ronnie's mud boats in LA. Unfortunatly being a single father of two I am happy to scrap toghter enough money to build one one knowing That I could never afford to buy a complete rig

here is his link;
http://www.ronniesairboats.com/mudboats.htm

"don't we all said that about our boats!" Now I can't help it but after reading your sigunature note then this I'd have to wonder wicth one you let your freind borrow :)

yes it hard to find a bad boat thats why we always talk so good about a boats, just look at it like this they(boats) don't talk back or argue with you, they on't mind spending all weekend out on the water, when your tierd of them you canjust back them in the back yard cover them up and expect them to stay there until your ready for them agian :)
