The magic smoke came out of my electric choke solenoid, and I need to replace it.

The motor is a 1976 85HP Evinrude, Model 85593E, serial number J0003386. Can anyone out there direct me to a good parts place?

Thanks,
AP

AP..... The engine is a 1975 85hp Evinrude, not a 1976. The solenoid part number is 386664 (OMC) and lists for around $100 at your local dealership (Whew!!)

Check with NAPA and the outboard repair shops. Possibly you can locate a good used one. Good luck.

Thanks Joe - there was always some debate as to whether this was a 75 or a 76. Guy that sold it to me was calling it a 76, but a knowledgeable buddy said 75. Thanks for confirming that.
Thanks for the part # too... the search continues!

Thanks again,
AP

Where are you at AP?
Is that choke the round metal cylinder with the plunger and wire connector to the choke butterflys.
I think I have one or two laying around. I'd let one go cheap.

Sounds like the right thing, Walker, I'd appreciate it if you could help me out. If you can get a pic, email it to parsleap@hotmail.com. I'm in Indiana, 47403.

Let me know how much you want for it and the shipping. Oh, and I had to cut the wires going into the solenoid, so if you've got the power wires going in, let me know how much you want for them too, otherwise I'll just splice 'em in.

Thanks,
AP

You can also update to the newer primer system.

Dhadley.... Wouldn't a carburetor update be involved in changing over to the primer solenoid system?

Joe, what we've done in the past was to use the new gasket (with the primer hole in it) as a template and drill the hole for the brass nipple. Its easiest to drill from the gasket side. The angle is fairly forgiving so its not that hard.

I've actually taken the choke butterflies and shaft out but you dont have to. Just lock them open. It didnt effect the running either way.

Most intakes have the passage in them for the fuel. If not we either cut the passage or put the nipples in the by-pass covers like OMC did originaly.

Re: Need Choke Solenoid

Hello everyone,

I am a new boat owner. I bought a 1985 Bumblee Bee with a 1975 115hp Evinrude last April. I am having a horrible time with the Chock Solenoid. The original one was blowing the main fuse. I have bought two new ones but they have burned up. I came across this port talking about updating to the new primer system. Does anyone have instructions on how to do this? Gets old taking the top of and using the manual choke. Any suggestions would be great. Boat run greats except for the choke.

Thanks,
Keith
