Need clarification on Mercruiser Stern Drive

I have a 1968 20 Ft Glastron I/O with a 153ci inline 4 cyl. My outdrive has the eye lift hole on the cap. I am told it is a MC-1. Can anyone verify this and or tell me what other information I can provide to determine if it is in fact an MC-1 ? Also is there any other name for the MC-1. I keep seeing things that say pre alpha series 1 , R, MR...... I need someone to explain to me the timeline and differences between the various pre alpha mercruiser sterndrives. BTW- I have searched for a serial numer and I cannot find one anywhere. Thanks in advance.

yep, i agree. that's the info i have too. i got my info from mercruiser engine/drive model year reference chart. you can also go here. http://www.mercstuff.com/drive_id.htm
this can give some of the ideas that were different between the models...

the other name for a mc-1 drive is just a mercruiser 1 drive.. that's what i've learned to call mine. i've the mc-1 drive too..

You will have to drop the lower unit and count the splines on the drive shaft. If it`s 8 ,parts are no longer available.If it`s 13, then it`s late model Series1

Bt Doctur,

I had an 8 spline but i was able to buy a 13 spline locally. What do i need to change in order to put the newer unit in ? Sorry for the stupid questions. I am somewhat mechanically inclined but I have no point of reference as I am new to outdrives.

You need the upper gear set made for a 13 spline shaft.
