Re: Need Dire Help with Shift Rod/linkage

At this point, I think I might have it. I am now two turns counterclockwise. May have to go to three turns out, but I'm keeping it here until I get the carbs rebuilt and the link & sync done.

It seems to go into gear now just before the carbs open, which I'm told is the key. The only thing is that the remote control moves more than I would think it should to get there. Maybe that needs to be adjusted.

No longer than I've had this boat, it's hard to remember where I positioned the remote control prior. But it's more than the 1 1/2" I was told it should be, but if it works, it works!

I'll keep this progress posted!

Looking at your pictures, it seems that the shift lever where the cable attaches is not parallel to the crankshaft where it should be. Adjust the shift rod so the lever is parallel when all the free play is "centered". That is where the adjustment should be so that both going into forward and into reverse has the same amount of lever travel. That is how the system is designed to work.

I like Seahorse's thought. If you want reverse not to come in contact with the block, neutral has to be more verticle. Also, your remote might be fine, but the cable stretched. You can adjust that out by effectively lengthening the cable housing by changing the location where the housing secures itself to the engine pan. There should be an adjusting thumbwheel to move the fixed point of the cable housing. Adding an eighth inch or so (moving the thumbwheel towards the end of the housing) may really make the cable feel better at the remote. I would take apart the remote as a last resort.

seahorse5, thanks I'll look to see if that's how it is now that I'm two turns out. If not, I'll go one more turn and see. I think I am really close now.

I got some pictures from someone with a working setup. It's a bit hard to tell because angles are different, but gauging from bolts and such, I look to be really close to his setup.

fp, I agree that remote is not what I want to pull apart, because most of my remote sets behind the side panel. I think it would be a small nightmare getting to that.

Again, thanks for everyone's help on this.

Brian,
Does the shift cable 'naturally' line up with neutral on the engine when the remote is in neutral? That's how I adjusted my cable, so it would just 'fall into place'.

Yeah, for the most part. At least now it seems to.
