need fin? where to buy?

I purchased a used Hyperlite Motive wakeboard - good condition.

My question is, having never wakeboarded before, is whether I need fin(s) or not. it didn't come with any, though the holes are there.

If you think I need them, any suggestions on where and what size? are brands fins interchangeable?

thanks in advance - looking forward to getting out and seeing if I can do this!

Try riding without first. If you get fins you want the 1" Hyperlite fins that come on their wake skates . You can get the 1.5" that came on the older Motives which make it more stable but that makes tricks worse. You might find some on craiglist.
Without fins surface tricks are easier but the board might feel a little unstable. With the short fin added in the centre you get a more stable feel. A deep fin just makes it a truck.
The only critical measurement is the spacing of the two screw holes to put almost any fin on.

I rode a board once with no fins, and it was waaaaay slippery. Could only really ride with my body facing toward the boat instead with a foot pointed forward. And the board would slip out from under me easily. It wasn't much fun with no fins. Maybe it was just that particular board, I don't know.

Thanks all - I'm thinking a fin may be good to start with - just for stability. Tricks may be a ways off!

Barts has one for Liquid Force - will have to check to see if has the same hole pattern.

If it doesn't, call them. Their warehouse is huge and they don't always show all "accessories" on their website.

You can also try evo.com, they have many wakeboard accessories. I'd get some small fins. Measure the hole spacing and you may need the mounting hardware as well if you just have holes. Some fins will come with it and some won't.

Just to close the loop on this, in case anybody else has same question later - I ended up purchasing:

Ronix Wake1.0" Black Fiberglass Ramp (set of 2)

and they have a 3-inch spacing between holes. Fit the Hyperlite great - now the hard part - figuring out how to wakeboard!

Congratulations. The wakeboarding is not too hard. (Well, the faceplants are when you catch the toe side edge) There is a really good DVD called 'The Book' which can help. You only need Volume 1 but the whole multidisc set is good.
Enjoy. :D
