Ok should of kept my mouth shut over the winter about these Force motors. But heres the?. Got a 1987 125 force. Know if there is one bad cyclinder will it still run?
Heres what happen. Took it out for a spin yesterday. Was out running it about 2 hours and on the way back in I was putting the throttle to it when it sounded like the motor had changed rythem. So I quick threw it in nuetral and everything killed at that point. Sat there a secound and thought oh ****. But hit the key and it started back up. It was missing but got back into the marina. Pulled up to the dock thinking I fouled a plug and went to get the trailer and came back and never did get it started again. Put knew plugs in it and it popped once but still wouldn't start. Know I took it in to a shop and he said the compression was 120 in three cylinders and 60 in one that is the #3 cylinder. Know I got it back home here and this other dealer says that there noted for pistons going. But he also says that it should still run. I guess what I was wondering if you all think that it should run to? He hadn't checked the compression yet and was kind of leaning towards the ignition boxes. He thought he'd get to it next week. What do you all think? Cylinder or both.

Also I should add this: I also did pull the gas line off the bottom carb and turned it over and it did pump gas out of the line. Also over the winter put in a new impeller and t-stat and head gasket. Could I of possibly did something?

FIST THING I WOULD LOOK AT IS THE COMPRESSION ON EACH CYLINDER.IF YOU HAVE A GUAGE TAKE A READING ON ALL CYLINDERS.SECOND MAKE SHURE THAT ALL 4 CYLINDERS ARE FIREING.THEN GET BACK WITH YOUR FINDINGS.GOOD LUCK :)

hello lonewolf. I don't have the boat here. But if it was a blown piston or one bad cylinder wouldn't it still start up and run.

Re: Need force mechanic input motor won't run

there is a big difference between a blown cylinder and a weak cylinder.if compression was low it should start but hard to idle.take a compression test ,see what are your reading.if you have a weak cylinder ,what you can try is to decarb the engine,it may free up the ring in the piston.this can only be done if you can get it to run.also let say reading on compressing are good ,and she still won't idle, but run at full throttle only ,it may be time to check out the stator.the stator has a high and low side that supply power to engine.but before you get into the stator.make shur your compression is o.k. carb's are o.k. and all cylinders are fireing.goood luck

I would remove the head and check the head gasket, unless you have a bore scope to look at the piston.

Sounds like a electric part to me ask around to see who has taken there engine apart. I would suspect maybe a CDI,trigger?

Did anyone other than Clanton read OLC's post?

He has a bad cylinder, compression test has been done. 120,120,120,60.

Whatever caused that probably caused the engine to decline to start.

Check your head gasket, OLC. Examine the cylinder walls. Don't sweat the other stuff unless you decide to rebuild it, which I wouldn't bother with. I would get an OMC or Merc or Japanese engine.

Good luck. :)

Re: Need force mechanic input motor won't run

I ran into a similar problem last year with my boat, with an 88 Force 125. I had bought a new battery and put it in, well it would run ok for a few minutes then it cut back and had no power, like it was running on 3 or even 2 cylinders. Well it all ended up that my problem was the battery that I had put in it. I replaced the battery and added a second one, and now its been running perfect since.
Hope this may help.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox

OLC with that compression would try to get it running before taking head off. I'm thinking two good cylinders dont have spark and the two others (one with the 60 psi) do have spark. Why did you change head gasket? After its running find the cause of low psi (60).
