I had recently posted a question about my 1990 E120TLESB. The #2 cylinder had no compression. I pulled everything and ended up replacing the piston and having the cylinder honed. The other three cylinders looked good so I rebuilt all four carbs and installed new plugs. I put the muffs on the motor and started it and it fired right up. :) However I have no water out of the tale tell. I had purchased a water pump rebuild kit and so I dropped the gearcase and pulled the cover off of the impeller in order to rebuild it. The impeller would not come off. I could not pry it off. There appears to be a slight amount of rust on the drive shaft where it meets the impeller. The impeller looked good and the housing showed minimal wear so I cleaned everything, replaced the seal ring and reassembled it all. Started the motor back up and still no water. The #2-#4 head gets noticably hotter than the #1-#3 head, but they both are too hot to hold your hand on for more than a couple of seconds after about thirty seconds of running. I've pulled the thermostat housings on each head after running and there is no obvious water. Just a little steam. Am I missing something? Assuming that the old pump is working, what other things am I overlooking? Also, would the #2-#4 head be hotter because I installed the new piston in that head and haven't broken it in yet?
Sorry for the long post and thanks for your help.

Denny
(Frustrated in TN)

Well first off, I'd get that impellor off and install a new one. If you are careful you can cut the impellor off with a cold chisel. The hub of the impellor is made of brass and cuts pretty easy. Don't want to mess up the driveshaft though. Then before installing the L/U hook a garden hose up to the copper tube in the midsection and see if water then comes out the thermostat holes. Make sure your tale tell isn't clogged up too. When installing the L/U be sure to get the copper tube into the waterpump housing and make sure the rubber grommet is in place in the housing to seal around the tube.

:D
Walker,
Thanks for the help. I pulled the L/U right after I got home from Church this afternoon and was prepared to cut the old impeller off, but it came off just like it was originally supposed to!
I did the total rebuild on the pump and reassembled everything. I then did a link-n-sync on the carbs and started it up on the muffs. Ran beautifully! I had a 3/8" stream out of the tell tale. We loaded it up and went to the lake for a test run. I ran it for over two hours between 1000 and 2200 rpms in order to allow the new piston to break in. It ran like a top! I'll probably take it back tomorrow to get a few more hours in. :D

Thanks again for all the help.

Mullda162
(Happy in TN)
