Any gm techs here? What is the procedure to change a serp belt on a 1995 Old 88 w/3.8L? It looks like it runs through the motor mount. Do you have to loosen or remove the motor mount? If this is true, no wonder they went bankrupt.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Not a GM tech but yes you have to take off the motor mount, I usually throw a block of wood on a jack and support on the oil pan on that side of the engine.

The bankruptcy meh eh I dunno the 3.8 you have was a solid design along with their generic V8 engine line and good Hydra Matic transmissions.

Hey windsor thanks for the reply. What all has to come off to move the motor mount? Do you disconect at the fender well? The engine or both?
Thanks

oh boy. I had to do one of these on a park avenue with the supercharged 3.8. Yep, the motor mount comes off, loosen everything on the fender and the block. Then you have to get the belt between the mount and the block. Its a PITA. I had to do a belt and water pump on my girlfriends.

It's been a while since I've done one, but they are a piece of cake. Taking the motor mount off only sounds intimidating. Just do like windsors03cobra said and put a wood block on a hydraulic jack to keep the engine supported before you loosen and remove the motor mount.

the whole mount must come out...just as the 2nd poster mentioned...use a block of wood and place a small jack under teh fron of the oil pan and jack just until the weight is taken off teh mount...pull the mount and replace teh belt...

Check teh tensioner as well...if the belt shows signs of the belt rough on the engine side the tensioner is weak and needs to be changed too....

and FYI the engine in that car is NOT and Olds engine....it IS a Buick engine...same 3.8L since the 60s...although this is the newer much revised Even-fire....

where as the earlier models were Odd-fire...

Re: Need GM tech - serp belt rpl on 1995 Old 88 ***UPDATE***

Just thought I'd post how I ended up on this.

It wasn't all that bad but still not someone could probably do in a road side emergency. You do need a jack.

1. Turn wheels all the way to the right. (I took the wheel off because when the idler puller went, the belt rubbed a hole in the power steering pump resevior (sp?).
2. Remove the small plastic splash shield. (held in w/3 little push pin rivets).
3. Place jack under oil pan, Lift with very little pressure.
4. Remove nut on stud at lower portion of the motor mount. Hopefully the stud comes out with the nut like mine did. Nut took a 19 mm socket.
5. Remove space between motor and motor mount. Sleeve tube about 2" long.
6. Watch how old belt comes out to see how new one goes in.
7. Install belt over pulleys and reverse 5 thru 1.
