My tach on my Ranger Boat stopped working. So from the dealer I ordered a New Red Teleflex one. All I did was remove the old..not sure what brand..and connect the plug, 3 prong to the new tach. The teleflex is set at 6P. I turn the key on..and the tach doesn't move.

Now I'm not sure on anything else other than what I have said. Any ideas? From what I was reading is that when the key is turned on the tach should go to zero.

Most tach failures are actually regulator/rectifier failures. The charging system sends the signal to the tach. If the system isn't charging, no tach. Put a voltmeter on the battery. Voltage shoud rise with RPMs. If voltage holds steady, you amlost certainly need a regulator/rectifier. Most such failures result from crossed, corroded, or loose battery connections (of all things).

Yes, when the key is turned on the tach should zero.

Willy first thank you so much for responding so quickly. More info that might help you to help. The boat sat for about 5 years. I took it to the dealer and got the motor all working. On the water the tach would register now and then. But it waved. Then it just stopped. Now I know the battery is charging good. Or charging that is. I use the boat about every 3 or 4 days. The dealer did put a new starter battery in it. Now I do have a Fluke 77 volt meter. It's pretty sensitive.

Question. Could the three hook ups for the old tach say be different than for the new? They're both in a triangular position. The wiring underneath the dash I could follow but it really is a wiring junk. Also the Teleflex tach has a setting of C's and P's. I have a 1986 Johnson VRO 150HP motor. Could the tach need set on 6C instead of 6P? The instructions say for any motors not listed to consult the dealer.
