Those old triple pawls are tricky... I like the single ones.

The grooves FR mentions with the recoil are part of the compression release, so you don't yank your shoulder apart trying to start that puppy when it's cold. If the grooves are cruddy, take the recoil off and clean them out, then lube the little cam that rides in them. Might also want to lube the recoil itself a little. That little cam shouldn't engage the grooves unless the rope is out a few inches. It should drop back clear of the grooves with the rope all the way in...you can adjust the rope for this by pulling the handle, removing the rope retainer and adjusting the rope length. Someone may have already done it and gotten it a bit short. Doesn't take much adjustment on the rope to make a difference.

Take the recoil starter off of the engine, hold it upside down, and pull on the rope, the three starter pawls' should fly out instantly with very little rope movement. Release the rope, and they should return to rest, also with the first movement of the starter pulley. If they don't do this, remove the pawl springs, remove the center retaining bolt, and lift out the center pivot hub thru the starter pulley. Under this hub you will find a spring wrapped around the bottom flange of the hub. This spring will be made in square section, not round. This spring must be wrapped to lye flat, not stacked.the outer tail of the spring most be spread out as you wrap it back to keep it lying flat. If the spring is stacked, the pawls' won't engage, and retrack properly.

Be careful with any recoil spring...they bite.
