Re: Need help!!! 86 Bayliner Capri

You bought a mid-80's Bayliner with wood rot and a Force? Congrats on buying the worst used boat ever! Ok, well it could be worse I suppose. It could have been an L-drive with angry racoons living in it :)

im confused.............

why would the racoons be angry?........racoons love old bilgeliners....especially with the L-drive......so do many other species of flora and fauna...as well as many varities of marine life using the sunken hulls as a artifical reef.....:D:D:D

(sorry....couldnt resist)....lol

gut it.....gut it all.....everything, and build it right.....replace the water sucking foam.....because in bayliners it is a structural component of the hull.

look up a guy called robj here on i boats.....then click his link.....his boat is a bayliner by another name.....i have personally seen his boat and it is fantastic.....he did it really well.....and you have all the info here that you need.

if we can help in any way we will.....

cheers

i have an 83 21' capri cuddy...would those boxes be the same?

Pretty much. Just boxes glassed to the deck full of foam from what I've seen. Sometimes incorporated into the side of the hull, depending on year and model.

all i can see of the foam is a sponge!!!! always wet and always causing issues.. can someone explain the need for it? i had in under the floor in the front and under the seats in fromt but why? to keep it floating if i capsizes? how is it structural?

almost sounds exactly like what i have. nice to see another fellow bayliner owner got a heap also...lol.....from what i heard the foam most the time is for incase you sink or something like that. But ide be careful because you might have CG regs that would require you to hav e some kind of flotation(foam in your hull) But go to homedepot or antoher hardware store and just get the thick sheets of closed cell foam and fill her in. Im thinking of doing something different all together...but goood luck man...sounds like you got alot on your hands, much like i do.
