heres my issue i have the mercury 1150 its a 1972 about a week ago i put it in the water to go fishing and it ran for about 3 mins then just died and wouldnt start back up so i got home and started looking at possible causes. i did do a compression check which all where 135psi. changed plugs out with new ones, also looked at the fuel pump which the diaghram was ripped so i got the rebuild kit and fixed it. checked the timing and its still good as far as i can tell. recleanded the carbs thinking that maybe the piece of the ripped diaghram went into one of the carbs(picture below of the ripped diaghram) is it possible that that piece might have went inside the engine and got stuck on one of the reed valves. cause its still not starting it will spitter and maybe run for 30 secs then die again. if anyone might be able to help before i take it to the shop and save me some money id appreciate it a lot. thanks

Re: need help again im lost

not sure if it is any help to ya but my 115 merc was doing that same thing and ended up the cdi's (switch box) not one but both,it took a while to figure this out because it would start and have spark then it wouldn't not saying buy new cdi's, but there is a way to check them, i'm fairly new with outboards but got a feeling you you got to be rich or handy, i'm not rich and my merc. is making me wonder if i'm handy... lol

im not rich by all means i am a mechanic in the army so that helps a lot, but i work on diesel engines not gas and not marine, but they are all along the same guide lines as of air, fuel, and spark. mine only haves one switch box on it i do know the white is getting power when you turn the key on and the red always has 12v... the brown kinda hard to test that one since its for rpm and green i have know clue about. on the other side i dunno if the white is suppose to have power or not if so there is nothing...only thing i know is im about to take it into work and use it for target practice on the range and get a newer engine.

You need to get a fuel pump kit for a start, your engine should have 12 volt to the red switch box wire all the time and 12 volt to the white wire when the key is on. Here's a test for the ign. from CDI
