The alternator on my 1982 35hp Johnson is no longer working. My main problem is that I have no idea where or what the alternator looks like. I'm not very familiar w/boat motor mechanics. Could someone please tell me where the alternator is located and what it looks like? Also do I just need to buy a new one or can you get them re-built like a car's alternator. Either way how much $ am I looking at for repairs? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Need Help: Alternator Quit Working

ok heres how i see it im no boat tech but thares a startor under the fly wheel i think thare be two yellows wires coming out of it those should wire in to a recifier bridge witch converts the ac wave to dc current some have a voltage reg too i think depending on the max amp output of the unit <br />5-7 amp unit i dont think does above that may have v/reg so couple things can go wrong the way i see it 1 the stator can go bad open or shorted to ground you can ohm that out with ease i do beleve, 2nd recifer can fri may even see fried make on it or v/reg can take a dive to last but not least good ole shtty connections checkum close and ck main fuse dont forget basics, like is it being triggered on? by ign switch? little lookin and checking and youll find the greif :D good luck
