Need Help and Info 1976 OMC 140 Sterndrive

I have inherited a Ozark Boats Model T-170 Runabout boat from my wife's family, bought new by her great-uncle and passed down thru the family. It has sat for about 9 years unused, and is now out in my barn. It was well cared for and
the stern drive was drained when put into storage, but no-one remembers exactly HOW and what to use to refill it!
I see that the lower unit fills pretty much exactly as my Johnson outboard does.
However, I am not sure what type of lube goes into the upper unit, and there are three lube spots that I have no idea what goes into them. I have attached pictures:

The lube spot closest to the bellows area has me stumped. I know the top of the stern drive is a dipstick and it fills from teh lower bolt on the starboard side, but what type of lube goes in it?


What type of lube goes into the gimbal/pivot housing that is on the left hand side of this pic?


What goes into the lube spot here under the intermediate housing? its a plastic bolt by the exhaust...

Also, I had read that there should be grease zerks around the pivot areas, but I cant find a single grease zerk on the unit?
The SternDrive model number is 980703; serial number W 66986

Type C for electric shifts in the lower, this one is important! there is generic type C stuff that i use, or you can get the OMC stuff which I believe is now called premium blend.

for all of the other lubes I have heard several opinions on what to put in.

in the upper , I usually use 80-90 (I think) you fill it from the bottom on the starboard side and stop when it hits the fill mark on the dipstick.

for that tilt quadrant, many have filled those with marine grease, to help water from coming in. Or you can use the same oil that you use in the upper.

there is a grease zerk under that plastic bolt on the exhaust housing. and there are 2 more zerks under your black steering bumpers on the intermediate. the bumpers just pop right off.

but if that boat has been sitting that long, I would remove the drive and seperate the upper and lower, check the splines, change impeller, ect. before you fill it up. that way you can see what are dealing with, and remove all of that old grease and start fresh.

Welcome aboard.

This is what I refered to as the lower unit?

Photo 2 - Shows the TOP screw to the lower unit. There is a second one at the bottom of the gear case (bullet shaped gig). Use those two ports to fill your lower unit with Type C. That plate just above the screw in the photo is where the lower unit starts ... it goes all the way down to the skeg.

Photo 1 shows the upper gear case (bottom of picture / top of stern drive) and the intermediate housing (top / closest to transom seal).

Pic 2 - in the foreground, little box (almost looks like a fishing reel) is the tilt clutch pack. Lube that with whatever lube you use in the upper gear case. You don't need the type C lube in there. The "quadrant" (I believe) is technically the quarter gear that is bolted to the outdrive to tilt the motor up and down. Pivot points on the OMC Stringers are the two side pieced where your black bumpers are.

Greasing that is important (as a BTW) ... it actually helps control the exhaust function of the intermediate housing.

THANKS!! Thats exactly what I needed to know! Manual is ordered and on its way!

And the upper gear case and intermediate unit take 80-90 gear lube? or is the lower unit Type C and the Upper Gear case/intermediate use "premium"?? that still has me confused..

I think this will keep it simple for the gear cases.

There are three, the top two get hi vis and the bottom gets premium or type c.

BTW, the screw closest to the transom seal in your first pic is for the intermediate housing, not the leg. It takes the same gear oil as the upper gearcase.
