1996 evonrude 115 60 degree. Working fine. I go to start to head to docks.. Nothing. No power. Got back to doc w/troller. Now can't get motor up because no power! The whole system is totally unresponsive. Help!! I tried this 'manual release' screw but I can't pull the motor up more than 2inch without killbng myself

Have you checked your battery cables to make sure they aren't loose or corroded? If you did the manual release screw then you probably lost enough fluid that it wouldn't work anyway.

Power trim and tilt is not fused. So, that means that there is something wrong in the battery cables, BOTH ends, and BOTH cables.
Check them out, clean thoroughly.
Of course, no power from the battery cables will also cause a no start condition.

Or...the battery is butt-***** bad. Open internally.

Batter cables clean as a whistle.

Battery good. Fish finder says 12.8v.. Even when I hit the trim button.. The voltage doesn't budge which means its not even trying.

Even thre self diagnostic sequence isn't working. I'm almost suspecting a bad ignition switch.

Anyway, got the motor up. Bout broke my back but at least I can get home!

Jump the battery with a good pair of jumper cables to the truck battery. See if it responds then.
sounds like a bad battery. Bad batteries will read 12v but can supply no current.

Its not the battery. When a battery has a bad cell, the voltage will tank upon load. Like I said, self diag isn't even working. I also tried jumping it while I was out there anyway, no dice. Its not the symptoms of a bad battery.

I still think its a bad ignition switch.

Ok, back home now. MAN it was hot out there. Puts you in a bad mood REAL fast.

Anyway, I'm going to go out there and troubleshoot later this evening.

Can anyone tell me if there are any side-affects caused by using the manual tilt release? Will I need to re-fill the trim and tilt fluid or anything?

Oh ya and GET THIS. On my way to the ramp this morning, a ranger gave me a yellow piece of paper notifying me that as of 2013, my local lake will be BANNING 2001 and older 2-stroke motors. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Tank under load....yse quite true.

Where did you post that it was rock solid under load, and what kind of load.
Not only that, but the fishfinder is on a different physical wire (usually) than the main battery connection to the engine.

Jump directly from the battery (both cables) to the starter. You have no juice thru the battery cables for some reason.

The T&T doesn't go thru the ignition switch.

My last post...Good luck.

Could be key switch. I had one go bad 12 miles out. I had power but no crank. Had a cell and a friend who guided me to take off the main cable connection harness inside engine. Then jump it with screw driver. Stated right up. Only problem was I had to use the trim buttons on engine coming in to port since harness was disconnected. Replaced key switch and repaired.

Wow "banning" 2001 and older 2-strokes. More lobbyists at work I guess. All the 2stroke owners should boycott paying taxes for a year, see how that works out.

Daselbee I think is on to something. Doesn't seem like the tilt/trim has anything to do with ignition. None I've owned has anyway.

Well according to the other poster, the T&T doesn't run through the ignition switch (which I find strange) - so given that, I think my issue is elsewhere. I suspect that wherever the battery cables ultimately connect to in the engine, may be loose there. I just don't know where those cables ultimately go - it's a tight squeeze inside that engine with wires and hoses!

I'll dink around tonight and report back.

Daselbee - I apologize for my short notes earlier. When you're out there in 105 degree weather on a launch ramp with a motor that won't go up, you don't have time to type full-fledged answers. I rely on you guys to just "go with it" lol. Now that I'm back on a computer, it's easier for me to go into more length as to what I've already tried.

Thanks everyone!

You did check the 20 amp fuse didn't you? The switch that send the control signal to the relays is fused as is the ignition switch.

I checked a fuse at the engine under the cowl, where it also held a spare under a red holder.

Where's the other fuse you speak of?!

Re: Need help asap!! Stranded at lake!

That is the only fuse in the system. If you don't have 12 volts there the issue is in the wiring coming into the engine or the battery. If the fuse is good you should have 12 volts with the engine off but the switch on at the purple wire (Tach Power). If you don't check for voltage on the red and purple wire going to the switch and the red and white wire running to the trim switch.

Check battery ground cable, both engine and battery side as well as internal breakage in the cable.
