Translation:

I have a 1969 Johnson 55HP , Model 55ESL69, Serial # J3011812.
The motor will not run right at idle. I have read in the forum that I should rebuild the carbs. I have rebuilt the carbs, put on a new coil, replaced the fuel pump , replaced the rotor and cleaned the points. I have a 'hot' battery (??).

The motor runs good at WOT, but while idleing down , the motor dies. After it dies, the motor is hard to crank again (turn over ??). After sitting a few minutes the motor cranks normally. The motor has 125lbs. of compression on all 3 cylinders. Each plug wire produces about a quarter inch blue spark to ground. I don't know what else to check. If there is a good Johnson Outboard mechanic out there, I would appreciate any advice. Are there any solutions to fix this problem, or is this motor a lost cause?? This motor is driving me to drink. I would like to go fishing but I can't slow this 'Mo-Fo" down.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Cordially,

Bstagner

Sorry you have not been getting help.
I read one of your posts a few weeks ago, but have no knowledge of your motor.

You say it starts ok.
Does it idle ok when you first start it?

Here's what I'm thinking;
The timing advance might be sticking.
When you are running fast, then slow down, the carb is closing, but the timing is not retarding or going back to its low speed position.

As I said, I don't know how your motor is set up, but it could be a bent linkage or a weak broken or missing spring.

Your spark does seem to be weak also.
Have the sparkplug wires been replaced?
If so, make sure they are NOT automotive type wires. They must be "solid wire core", not carbon fiber. You can get solid wire core plug wires from NAPA or a marine dealer.

Hopefully someone else will chime in here and give some suggestions.

bstagner
when it stops and is hard to restart, is it hot? How long has it been since the impeller was changed? Just my thoughts, good luck!
Richard

Brenda.

That engine is very sensitive to carb synchronization and linkage to the ignition.

Get a Repair Manual and do the linkage and synchronization procedure.

Let us know what results you get.

Good luck. :)

Just my $.02 worth here.....sounds like the sync and link is outta whack or the carb low speed needles are in need of adjustment. If the timing and carbs are not in time with each other, it won't idle for crap. If the needles are out of adjustment, ditto the above.

Turn each carb needle in till it's LIGHTLY seated and then turn out 1 1/2 turns. Start the engine and let warm up to operating temp. Put the engine in gear, nice to have someone do this cause it's hard to steer, run the controls, make needle adjustments and drink a beer all at the same time. Anyways....start with the top carb and start adjusting the needle in about 1/8 turn at a time and wait for 15 secs for adjustment to effect engine. Do this until engine starts to idle bad and then go in the opposite direction until the engine idles bad. Turn the needle midway between these two points and go to the next carb.

The procedure takes a while to do right. Let us know how you make out.....adjusting the carbs. Thanks.

Hi,
I've been working on my 30HP Johnson (yes, it's NOT the same motor as yours, but similar symptoms) and thought it might be helpful for you to read the thread "1956 Johnson RJE-18 30HP Carb Info Needed". If your motor has the high and low speed needle valve adjustments ??? just re-building the carb might not solve the problem. I found stripped threads in the low speed adjustment only after removing the carb and needle valves .... read the thread and see if it may apply to yours.
Sorry to butt in, but thought this info might help. :D

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.(Set all carbs to this setting before beginning the following adjustments)

Pertaining to the following adjustments, do the top carb completely first before dropping down to the next carb. When finished, recheck the adjustments.

NOTE: If the needle valve retainers at the front of the carb are BLACK or WHITE, replace them with RED retainers OMC number 315232. The RED retainer will keep them from moving due to viberation.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.
