I dont know much about boat engine repair. However, I live in the Bahamas, can u say irony!! but anyway, I have a 4hp nissan (OLD) motor and a 15hp like 79 i think motor. I have all hell in the world to get manuals for them here so i wanted to know if any of u have them in a digital format. Adobe would be nice. The 4hp nissan is unreliable(runs for 5-10mins and shuts down) and i cant get the 15hp jomnson started. Cleaned the carb, bought new plugs and still will not start. someone suggested that the points and condenser is in need of being changed. However i dont know what replavement to use. took the motor to the service shop and they are baffled as well. Thanks for any assistance rendered.

You need to first make sure you have adequate compression in both motors ( generally 100 psi). You can buy a compression tester or have your shop do this. Unless you have adequate compression, other fixes are useless. I would buy a spark plug tester and see if you are getting spark after you determine you have compression. If you have compression and spark, then the problem probally is fuel related.

Hiya & welcome,

For your 15 hp look here... it's a great article with tons of useful info. A service manual would probably be a good investment (buy online and have it sent).

http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing%20Info/Johnson%209.9_15.htm]15 hp web page[/URL]

Have you ever seen the 15 hp run? Is it new to you?

Does the 15 hp have spark? Fuel/air/spark... the 3 ingredients for combustion. If there's spark, then check fuel (hose OK?). Also, check compression. If you have fuel/spark/air but not compression (broken piston/rings) it may not run either. But, OB's often run surprisingly well on one cylinder (except for lack of power/bogging down), so you should check that anyway.

hope that helps.

Brent

In what I have chevked as far, I think that the compression is ok. I hav taken the carb off and cleaned that up. The coils, points and condensers i am not too sure about. got it to start for a second but it shuts right back down. the ingo on that page i think will serve me well, thanks. does anyone have anything along the line of schematics or a pictorial representation of the structure and breakdown of that motor? if possible, both. thanks. By the way you should if u get a chance, visit us in the Bahamas. You will all love it. Remind me to tell you what has me interested in fixing this boat to go out in.
