boat 048.jpg[ Hi everyone, My first time. I got a 1987 sunbird corsair. It has been sitting for about 4yrs. I been cleaning the bottom with muriatic acid. This stuff doesn't want to come off. It looks like a blue green and the gel coat has chips and deep scratches clear to the fiberglass. I need some on how to get it off and to fix the gel coat.

Re: Need help bottom cleaning

Welcome to the forum!

Easiest way is with a paint stripper. My preference is a product called Aqua Strip (water based). Works pretty well. For the amount of bottom paint you have, it will take it right off. Apply with a disposable brush and let sit overnight (10 hours or so). Lay some plastic sheeting on the ground and go at it with a putty knife. Cleanup and rinse the hull of whatever is left (a scrub brush works well). Sand whatever is left (80 grit) and the hull will be clean as a whistle for repairs and re-coating of paint.

Bottom jobs are MESSY. There's no way around that one. Whenever you're sanding this stuff, make sure to wear a respirator (not the paper kind, but a good respirator), a tyvek suit and rubber gloves (goggles are good as well). If you can post some pics of the gel chips, etc we can give our $.02

Good luck!

Word of warning from someone who worked in a yard. If you taste anything sweet like candy STOP. Your respirator is not working. I can show you guys down here who have been working around this stuff to long that can barely sign their name. NOT GOOD.

why don't you just prep and paint? Are you trying to go with a non painted bottom?

I don't know what to do. I never owned a boat before, or been around them. What is best to do paint or gel. I got scratches clear to the fiberglass so triying to how to fiberglass is new to me to.

I 2nd that about the toxicity of the paint.. Looking over these photo's, if it were MY boat, I would remove all the paint material, sand the bottom with 60 grit to even things out and make smooth again and revel any areas that should be touched up / repaired.. If you can, I would then go over with an epoxy barrier coat (IP2000) and then bottom paint. Its a process, but not a difficult one and you will not have to look at the bottom again for quite some time! :) Regardless of how you decide to go, continue to post pics on the progress and you will find alot of people willing to weigh in and offer guidance.

If you're finding blisters, the sanding that I mentioned in my previous post will open these up; factor these spots in as 'repairs'. thickened epoxy will fill these in when dry. The route of using a barrier coat sounds like the best approach (however not necessarily the cheapest / easiest). Still, for this size boat should not be too bad.

Re: Need help bottom cleaning

As I keep cleaning I found alot of blisters. They are dry inside from sitting for so long out of the water. I got better pics to see if this help on decision. If everything is allright then so how far do I sand all the way to fiber glass and then epoxy and paint. Can anyone tell me what a barrier coat is.

When sanding do you use a sanding block or can you use orbit sander.

Yup, those are blisters (gives me the willies looking at it :) ) Use a random orbit and 40-60 grit paper and take it down to bare glass (get rid of all the white gelcoat). Hand sand on the detailed areas and clean the surface real well. A barrier coat is essentially an epoxy concoction with a high solids content to prevent moisture absorption into the fiberglass. Here is one that I recommend http://www.iboats.com/Interprotect-...9085052--**********.378353669--view_id.163344

Follow the directions for prep and application then follow up with a bottom paint (I would recommend a hard coating versus an ablative for a power boat / trailer-able).
