Ok here we go another which engine question!

I have a 1992 Waco 1436. I am worried about putting a new engine on it. The weight bothers me. I already have a 1980 Merc 25 on it but she is tired.

If you where in my shoes what would you do?

I was really looking at the Evinrude but it weights as much as a 4-stroke.

I have local dealers for Mercury,Yamaha,Evinrude,Nissan,Tohatsu,Honda.

Buy a a good used mid 80's to early 90's JohnnyRude in the 25-35 hp range. Might need a 35 if you want the same power as your Merc.
Parts for that motor are cheap and plentiful and those motors don't get tired.
If your going to go 4-stroke then go with Yamaha and secondly Tohatsu because of price and its the same motor as the Nissan and Merc's just a different cover. Honda is over priced.

I believe you can still find a new yamaha 25hp 2-stroke. If I were buying a new motor for that boat, it's what I'd get.

Anything bigger than a 25 is an absolute no-no on a 14x36 jon. I wouldn't even put a 25 on one, but obviously you've been running it like that with no issues. The 25 is a great all purpose power plant, but I wouldn't turn down a good deal on a 15-20 if I were in your boat (like that?;)).

Thanks for the reply's. I have been running the 25hp with no issues as far a how the boat handles. It is rated for a 20hp but what is 5hp? LOL

I was kicking around adding additional flotation to the rear. Something like Beavertail performance pods. That would counter react the weight of the newer engines.

I welcome the suggestions for the older engines but what I am looking for is reliability. On those cold *** mornings when i am ready to go duck hunting i want it to crank on a couple pulls.
