After removing the plywood deck, I found wood needing replaced. How do I go about ripping the stringers length wise as I only need to replace the top 3 inches of woodl I did drill all stringers at various depths to find dry or wet wood shavings. I only need to replace wood around the area holding the fuel tank. Yes I did remove the tank. Just trying to make a good cut to replace with a new wood plug. thanks to all.

Re: Need Help cutting stringers

its going to be tough to replace the top few inches....

the lower cut is not too bad but the upper cut is tricky. it has to be paralell to the underside of the deck.

i would just replace the whole section....

however......if you screw a new peice of stringer beside the old one, level with the top of the existing stringer. then take the circ saw and cut thru both stringers, you will have a carbon copy of the old one and the cuts will be the same.

you could also just cut the rotten sections out and sister the new wood on to the old ones. then glass the whole shabang togeather.

bear in mind that the existing stringer is probably wet deep inside the bottom of the wood and the fix will only last ten years......replacing will make it permanant.

It's all dependent on how much work you want to get involved in right now. I agree with Oops, and with the amount of work he's done, his advice is definitely trustworthy. My thought is that a temporary repair is a permanent repair until it fails again, because no one ever goes back and fixes it right once the object becomes useable again.

Cut out the rotted part...and that will leave you the rest which will be wet, and already starting the rot process. (It's a fungi, remember....) Sometimes it's easier to simply do it right the first time....replace the stringers, remove wet foam, etc. A good winter project.
