i have 1989 mercruiser alpha 165 and am trying to locate a bolt on kit that includes a 4bl. carburater & new intake manifolds. also would like to have any info and advice on how this bolt on kit works to increase max hp.
anywhere from 86 to 89, the 165 was the 470 style engine.
There are no "Kits" for that change, you would have to find all the seperate parts for the manifold and other parts used, as they are all NLA from Mercruiser.
If you Click,.. Right Here,....
You'll find a neet little site with Alot of info for the beginning Boater,.....
After you look around alittle,... You'll know the names of the Parts you need....
If Not,....
Come on back with specfic questions,+ the answers will be easily understood....
Good Luck,......
Btw,......
For that old obsolete warhorse of your's,.... ebay is a useful resourse......
Where to look? local marine salvage/junk yard or there is always ebay.
You will probably find that most on this will suggest that you leave well enough alone. This engine was a frankenstein creation that Mercruiser abandoned after only a few years. You would be better off saving your money for the repairs that will eventually be needed, as parts tend to be very expensive for this engine.
Thanks for the plugging me into this site. Plenty of great info but not as specific as I need to understand what to look for and what to do. Any ideas?
Don't waste your time or money trying to put all the parts together. Mercruiser tried the 4bbl carb for a few years and found it didn't work that well.
As I said before, there is not kit. you will have to find all the parts that are different from yours. A service manual will help, but it will not tell you how to change from one to the other. That just takes mechanical abilities and being able to understand what one part does that the other doesn't and why you have to change this for that.
