Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum. I have a few quick questions because I'm at my wits end.
I was gifted a '79 or '80 Mercury 9.8 outboard motor (serial number 5356297). A buddy of mine is helping me repair many of the broken and rotted out parts on it.
I can't for the life of me find a carb repair kit or a float for it, and I'm becoming increasingly frustrated trying to scour the internet. could anyone point me in the right direction as to where to find these parts?
I've checked boats.net, iboat, all kinds of forums, and I can't find any parts for this specific carb/serial number.
I'm not experienced with motor repairing at all, but I'm learning a lot so any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

im also new to this. There are sticky’s on the main forum page. You can use that to help guide you to find the year. Then you can find our parts on the mercury marine site, they have a parts catologue. Once you have part numbers and think you can tackle it call a dealer in your town. They can order most parts, or they’ll direct you to a place you can order them. I had to call four different dealers. Once you have a part number they’re quite happy to order the part and make the money. My motor is a fair bit older than yours (1970) and I got two carb kits for 24$ cad.

Sometimes best to check with a dealer, Mercury in this case, either online or at their brick and mortar.

I had the same motor years ago, I seem to recall that there were different carbs used.

So get the carb part number and contact a Merc dealer.

not only different carbs, when you get to the raw water pump, you need to measure the driveshaft as there are two different water pumps available.

Just checked on the mercury website parts catalog, and that specific carb serial number doesn't appear anywhere. It's like it doesn't exist. I checked international, Canadian, and Belgium models too just to try every route.
