Need help finding year of outboard.

This is my first post here. I just got this boat from my brother, it hasn't been run in two years. Got it running fairly smooth but will not pick up speed. I need help finding out what year it is. Serial # is 6581642. One place said 1984- another site said 1981. Any help would be appreciated.

It's a 115 hp on a 17' procraft fish and ski boat.

Thanks so much you guy's. Ya'll are great. Now I need to order a manual and get started working on it. I have already redid the carbs, ran seafoam thru the engine, replaced the fuel tank and hoses and put new plugs in. It idles fine and runs okay, but at wide open throttle it only goes about 15 to 20 mph. I'm new to outboards so this has got me stumped. Any ideas what to check next?

Did you pull the carbs to redo them? Sometimes you need to synch the timing advance and carbs after the carbs have been pulled/reinstalled.

mercury database does not show a manufacture date but here is what it says
Warranty Period: 07/02/1984 - 07/02/1985
Manufacture Date: NONE
so I would assume it was an 83 or 84 purchased in 84
