I have a 1991 Evinrude 200 VRO, I lost the charging system and the tach as I posted about a week ago and was told it was probably the regulator/rectifier. I have been to 3 dealers and have had NO luck! The reg./rec. I have in my engine sits over the water jacket as to cool it down, it has 2 yellow wires - one with a gray tracer, a gray wire, a red wire and a purple wire. Here's the problem ... I was told by 2 of the dealers that the new unit has been modified by the company and they did away with the purple wire. I was told by one dealer that the purple wire actually powers up the unit and the new unit should have the purple wire as well as the others, but the last dealer I went to told me Bombardier has modified the unit and HAS done away with the purple wire. So needless to say I bought the unit from them and now the boat won't start at all. I get power at the dash on all the gauges but when I turn the key I get nothing, nil, nadda, zilch! I put the old unit back on and it fired right up ... still no charge or tach but first turn of the key I had an engine that wanted to go! After this I put the new unit back in and exactly the same as the first time, power everywhere but the engine don't start. It's like trying to start the motor with it in gear so you know there is no noise at all coming from the engine. Guys is the purple wire necessary or not? I'm about to blow a gasket over this, the new unit cost me $225.00 and its about as useful as a rock! Can anyone give me any help out there as to what is wrong, the wire delema or where I can find a unit exactly as the first one with the purple wire? HELP!!!!!
