Hello everyone, I just acquired a 19ft Wellcraft cuddy with the Mercruiser Alpha One 2.5 litre 165 4 cylinder. I have not attempted to start this engine yet. I was told it last ran a year and a half ago before winterization. I removed the carb and cleaned it out. The coolant tank was empty, so I will fill that tomorrow. I will be changing the plug and wires. The coil had water in it so I will be replacing that. I am also going to change the oil, and I noticed there is no oil filter on it right now I don't know why. I will try and drain the old fuel from the tank I haven't checked that out yet. I tried to crank the pulley by hand on front, and couldn't even move it. I am worried the engine may be seized or something. Does anyone have any more suggestions on what to change or look for on the engine before I attempt a start? Any advice is appreciated I am hoping to have this boat running and in the water next weekend. I am charging up the battery tonight, I pulled off the valve cover also, and nothing looked out of the ordinary, but I am very worried about the collant being empty and not being able to spin the crank. ANY advice or suggestions are appreciated thank you!

I will try and match up a filter through the manuals I think. The year is 1987. I'm worried that this thing won't start. I'll get some pics up tomorrow

Ayuh,... I don't think you've got a 2.5l either,.... I'm bettin' it's the 470....

Do a search on "470",... Much has been written about 'em.....

with the plugs in or out? if the plugs were in then you would have to be pretty strong to move it

Really, if you put a socket onto the crankshaft bolt, with a 1/2 inch rachet, you should be able to turn it quite easily. If you can't you got other problems.

Have a great day

Pull the spark plugs and squirt a few shots of oil in each cylinder and let set for a day. Then while the plugs are out try to turn it over with the starter.

Thanks for the advice, I was trying it with the plugs in, and only tried it by hand, so hopefully there are no big issues. I'm gonna pull the plugs and try it then. I think I'm going to bring the boat to the marina this week and have them try and get it running. I'm not too familiar with these engines and they know what they're doing.

Even with plugs out you better have eaten your wheaties to turn the crank by hand.
