I’m trying to identify this boat and find the HIN so I can register it. I bought it along with a trolling motor and a running Montgomery Wards 5 hp outboard for 100 bucks at a garage sale about 10 years ago. No title, and I’m sure I don’t have the bill of sale after so long.I’ve only ever used it at a private late, so it has never been registered by me.Now I have a son who would like to be able to take it out fishing and I want it registered. I cannot find an hull identification number on the rear of the transom. The only thing I can find is the sun faded plastic plate with the numbers 000843 stamped into it. Whoever had it before me painted it and I’m not sure if the paint might be covering up the HIN. Nebraska game and parks, Nebraska DMV, and my county treasurers office have been no help, other than tell me I need to find the hull identification number. I think it is a StarCraft Sea scamp 12.

Likely pre early 70s, and that means it doesn't have a factory HIN.

Check the Nebraska regulations for a VIN verification form. You fill out the form and get a law enforcement officer inspect it for a HIN.

If it doesn't have a HIN, officer signs form and you take the form to regulation office and the state will issue you a HIN.

Key HIN Requirements in Nebraska:
  • Location: Permanently affixed to the starboard outboard side of the transom, within two inches of the top, gunwale, or hull/deck joint.
  • Format: 12 characters, continuous, without spaces or hyphens.
  • Missing HIN: If your boat is post-1972 and lacks a HIN, you must apply for an Assigned ID Number through the Nebraska DMV.
  • Exemptions: Boats manufactured before November 1, 1972, are exempt from titling, but still require registration.
  • Validation: All first-time owners of newly acquired motorized vessels must obtain a title from the county treasurer in their county of residence before registering, according to Boater Education Nebraska.
For further assistance, inquiries regarding certificates of title can be directed to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles at 402-471-3918.

I doubt this is a Starcraft.
Bow cap is not correct.
Transom corner caps were not welded on, on Starcraft.
Also, corner caps would have had a large "star" cast in the top.
And transom handles we cast in the transom caps.
And the seats look a bit off.

Sure, not all models were the same, but Starcraft was consistent with some design items.
