I have an Elgin 7.5 hp motor that will not start...I haven't had a chance to even test it for spark yet (im helping a friend on this one) but i looked for a serial number so i could start researching what makes this little guy tick, but couldn't find a serial number anywhere on it. It looks a little old but i don't know how old, so i need to start by finding the year model of this motor...but no serial number to reference....Any help would greatly be appreciated...Thanks!

That is sort of like asking what year is an Oldsmobile. We need something to go on. A picture. A description. Something.

Re: Need help/info for Elgin 7.5 hp

Hey F R...I went googling and found where the tag is...inside the tiller handle. Now i have the #'s...Serial is 9731 3279 and the Model is 571 59731...571 indicates it was made by West Bend for Sears...The rest of the numbers im not sure how to decipher. The 59 in the Model # makes me think it's a 1959, but the websites i visited suggested McCulloch took over supplying Sears in "59...It could be stock produced by West Bend that carried into '59...I don't know...Im now looking for exploded views of the motor assembly...Any input is still greatly appreciated!

Thanks a bunch F R! This iboats forum never lets me down! When i was Googling this motor i seen a lot of older iboats Threads asking about these motors and noticed you were very knowledgable about these motors...!! Im going to read the Link you sent, but i want to educate myself as much as possible before begining any work on it. I really appreciate your help...It's gonna be several days before i can do a spark check, compression check etc...I will start another Thread (if needed) once i perform some of the initial tests. What is the correct spark plug for this motor and what kind of numbers should i be looking for as far as compression ( i know it should be within 10% of each other) but what could one consider to be "good" psi numbers. BTW, this little motor is in excellent condition on the outside and really appears to be unmolested...bolt heads on the motor still have paint on them, fittings and other components are all original...looks like a nice little motor! Thanks a bunch!
