I'm new to owning a boat. I got a small Jon boat with a Johnson seahorse 5 hp. At first it was bogging out at wide open throttle. I changed jet and it now runs great for about 100 yards then shuts off. I'm at my wits end trying to figure it out. Please any help if appreciated. Thanks

Why did you change the jet did you clean the carb at all and what did you change it to.. Try pumping the ball on the fuel line to see if it keeps running if it does fuel pump is probably bad.

Friend I got it from bought jet in an attempt to help fix. Tank had vent on, even unscrewed cap to make sure vent wasn't messed up. I did pump ball on gas hose but didn't make a difference. I also took apart the carb. All 4 jets out and cleaned them before I took out this morning.

It's a 2001 Johnson seahorse 5 hp model is j5rvsi

Really a Suzuki then !

Fuel filter OK ?

Pumping the ball should eliminate a faulty fuel pump and also air leaks at the connector.

I believe it has a internal tank as well as the remote tank. Is the internal tank outlet valve shut

have you checked the operation and adjustment of the carb float and needle valve

Have you tried just using the internal tank

Motor does have an internal tank. Does samething with both (internal and external) tanks. I did pump tank ball to see if it'd help with nothing different.

Float does work and needle moves freely but not sure if set right.

sounds like it's been running out fuel in the bowl, then quitting. If so, think it could still be a float valve issue like Vic suggests. Maybe the needle is periodically sticking (maybe missing the wire clip).

Is the selection lever set correctly? Not sure if you run with fuel in both tanks -- possible the lever is mistakenly set to an empty tank?

Hmmm. What clip?? I can't think of a clip in there. Needle moves greet when I do the float. I'm fairly certain it isn't adjusted right as well.
I had gas in both tanks. But it was set correctly.
Operation is fine but not sure on setting. What's the best way to check setting of it??

have you changed/checked the fuel lines in a while, I've seen where the inner lining of some hoses collapse, then it restricts the flow,

Not as far as I know. Bought about a month ago. I know the hose from main fuel filter to carb is clear. Not sure about others.

Wire spring clips are included in most carb kits -- clip to the needle and the float arm. The needles with the rubber tips can tend to stick in the seats.

[edit. On float setting, I just eyeball it -- level with the inverted carb top. Never have problems.]

Ok. This one doesn't have them. Looked at a diagram of carb and it doesn't show it either. So at least not missing anything.

rubber tip aside, needles are different. No place for the clip to attach on the smooth ones.

just struck me -- It's possible to install the float upside down. should have mentioned that.

Ok. This one is a smooth square in the body. I'll take carb out tomorrow after work(be later work a 12 hr day tomorrow) and try to get a couple photos of float on and needle for those of yal that think it may be the problem to have a look

Yeah, your carb is a little different, and float might be a little more difficult to assemble incorrectly. (Little different needle too.)

So yesterday when I took the carburetor off I just did the float in the New Yorker the needle would go down lower but go up all the way to close off the gas. I tried to crank it today and now it won't crank. Any advice?
