I have a 1987 Mercury 20 hp that I am wanting to make electric start.. I can't find a an electric start kit for it so I was just wondering if anyone knew a part number that I could search for a complete kit or if someone could give me a list of parts I would need to do it. Thanks!

How much do you plan on spending on this project? New parts would come out to far more than wht the motor is worth, that leaves finding another motor for parts.

eBay is a good place to look for this stuff.

You need to get the parts diagram for the electric start version of that motor and go over it in detail.

I was hoping I could be able to do it for 150-250.. Do you think I could stay in that budget and do it?

Not new, sometimes these mods cost more than a thousand $, and that's if the parts are still available. Finding a dead motor is normally the easiest way to do it.

I agree. If you want to stick to your budget, start looking for a junked motor with the parts you need. They're out there. I bought the exact motor you're looking for off Craigslist a couple years back for $100, with electric start. It was literally a basket case, came in pieces in a couple of buckets. I sold the kit to a neighbor who had his shoulder rebuilt and could no longer pull start his 25 Merc.
