Re: need help mercruiser coupler, dons

don i have a ?? that i dont want to start a new topic on.

been as my engine is out and i just got the boat i would like to change the lower shift cable, what kind of tool is require to change it.

i ask the mechanic to just put it in while the engine is on the floor, but he gave be that funny look, and said come spring he will do it.

can i at least take out the old one and at least put the new in the hole and let the do the outer part come spring?

Rather the engine is in or not, doesn't make that big a difference. What you may be hearing is that he is busy doing winterizations before it gets too cold.
Find out from him. If you are just wanting him to to this job so the engine can be put in later, I see his point, BUT, I don't know your situation, or your mechanic. But even though the coupler may look ok, it may be the wrong one for the application.

PLEASE, PLEASE answer the question of what year your boat, engine, and outdrive is.

Obviously the boat has been repowered. From the sounds of the coupler problem, my guess is a newer engine was installed and they tried to use the old style coupler. Personally, I haven't tried it or compared them to know if it will work or not.
An 85 engine would have been the smaller flywheel and the coupler you have now.
Newer engines use the newer style coupler like the one below.

So I really can't tell you if it would work or not. Hopefully one of the other guys that have re-engineered and newer engine to an older drive with the older coupler can help.

Well, I went the other way. I have an '84 engine with a 12" flywheel, and am using the triangle coupler. The only reason is that I bought a "package" of gen 2 parts including the coupler.
I've located and drilled 3 new holes to suit the flywheel on a milling machine with a digital readout, then cut the protruding tips off.

The original stringer coupler was equivalent to a low profile older Merc coupler, using the 6 bolts into the crankshaft.
Had I been sure that the older Merc coupler was the same spline as a triangle, I would have looked for one.
