To anyone who can help me much thanks ahead of time.1st time Force owner I’m clueless to it,nothing like the Johnsons I’ve had.1st ride out today, usually it’s me and my kid but don’t want her to be on boat during seaworthy run, anyhows I think I just learned something I haven’t known in 18yrs,I assumed tilt trim was same thing on boats but Tilt and Trim are 2 sep. functions I now know and it’s only tilt that I have. Ive had a I/o merc and all 90s Johnsons,so forgive my lack of.
Its a 85hp Force Model is 856XTB1987 on a 17ft bass striker. Started fine other then the boot that goes to the idle relief ports leaking water and exhaust wich i knew about prior to,i found this when I got it home and went through it.I think it’s missing the big oring seal that goes on exit side I only see the boot goin in the hole,no oring or clamp, engine side has correct clamp and also a much thinner extra clamp next to it,I’ll get a new boot and oring but so I use sealant on exit side hose end and oring because it Seems it will be hard to get it to seat, right now it’s leaking but no holes. My bigger issue then I tilted up as I have Done for so long to avoid rocks at ramp and soon as I put the boat in gear I heard a minor bang and motor went strait down.Thought I busted lower unit gear at 1st,but it was fine so I ‘tilted’ up put in gear and soon as I move boom motor falls back down.So you can’t use your tilt as a trim I assume but why not,it goes up like trim, that’s where I think I’m missing parts on it.
Now to get it out of the way the bang I found out after leaving water was I can lift the motor up a bit no matter if it’s tilted up or down it seems like it’s supposed to be like this, have a little play. When it dropped in water it was the bang noise. When I lift it up it only goes up a tiny bit and let go of it and it will seat where it was. Anyhow it will stay in the up position for days or while towing etc. it don’t go down on its own,but I can push really hard on it and push it down back to level. Am I supposed to be able to do that?It does take some force to do it.
But the big problem here is I basically can’t use the boat until I learn how to manually trim, because I’ll tilt it up it will stay up in water at idle. Put it in gear and it goes down, all the way down but I don’t think as far down as it can it looks as if it levels off dead even because I can tilt down just a little bit while driving but can’t tilt up. So the boat in motion brings the motor down.
I thought it was the wale tail it has a very mild 1 not the huge ones but it don’t make sense because I’m going forward the pressure on motor is to push it backwards not forward and down so I eliminated the tail. The motor has 2 rams nothing in the middle, now that I remember my 92 Johnson did have extra cylinders something in middle and also had a lock I can swing down to trailer it this force has a latch with spring but I see no lock no rod nothing I can use to hold motor in position. There’s about 4-5 holes I assume to put a rod through to hold motor,i was gonna use these to hold motor up to drive the boat but the closest hole up would still leave motor barely trimmed up.
Might be something missing that goes with this latch.
Anybody heard of this issue or I’m Just new to non trim motor..tilts up just fine but throttle up and down she goes and will only go up in idle. Stop, idle and tilt up no problem it will stay there, push throttle tiny bit to idle speed it will slowly go down, any faster and it falls down. Kinda scared to put the kid on the boat because today was river day thank God,we 90% of the time hit Lake Michigan many times at night in rough water and waves and need Motor in high trim.
The motor is free to bounce up a few inches seems that’s as far as it will free bounce,it didn’t bounce with me at all when I hit wot but it was calm water. 2nd,I got 27mph at 4500rpm,it won’t hit its peak but it’s only missing a few mph Im guessing and I assume it’s from being trimmed to far down or over pitched. Again guys Sorry i just learned this today The 2 are different but I’m guessing I only have tilt as the switch say tilt. Being it was almost all the way down I think that’s what took away a few mph but I doubt it took 1k rpm, this I’m sure I can Fix by dropping pitch. Guy has a SS 13x19 on it now. People say the 85 force on a 17 bass boat heavy load Go with 13/15 and even lower. Some even say use 12” diameter and a low pitch like 15,13.I need top end in rough water more then hole shot.
I’m not even worried about that I can’t jump to prop until I can confirm my max rpm trimmed up. No oil leaks she ran actually good very quiet engine but no hole shot at all and sluggish at wot assume from the motor drag.I don’t like anything but outboards and johnnys but I’ll give it a chance because it seemed to idle and run great never cut off,112psi on all 3 cyl dead even but I tested on cold motor and throttle at idle as I don’t know how to bypass neutral switch. The Force doesn’t have throttle idle.
I’m very sorry for all the writing I figured let me give all the info at 1 time incase I find someone who will be like enough to attempt to help me they’ll have something to go on as it looking at a few issues. I can’t use this boat like this until I find out how to Keep trim up,or use tilt as trim idk. And also what it is I’m missing, there’s like a old 70s car door latch with spring under back of motor where those slots are for a rod,it seems something would lock under it To hold motor in place or it’s used to release something.
Was gonna check tilt oil but there’s a giant screw, looks same as gear fill screw, but much much larger, but it’s on lower part of cylinder unit and halfway up is a tiny rusted Phillips screw. Nothing on top of the cylinder to fill at just a Wire like a ground.
Again thanks to anybody that took the time to read this heap of blabber I wrote and help me,we have just 2 months to spend on it together then I gotta jet back to San Diego. I wish I woulda found a motor im familiar with but the market is crazy people want triple the value I was Forced to buy a Force.
