This is my first post to this forum. I am new to outboard repairs, and have found the postings on this forum to be extremely helpful. Below I'll describe my issue which may be novice, but I have yet to nail it down.

I have a 1991 Mercury 90 Hp, purchased this past Spring. I have used almost every weekend since I have owned and it's performance seems to be deteriorating. Originally the engine would always start in neutral without using the fast idle, but recently I have had to use fast idle to start it, on both cold and warm starts. The motor does not seem to start properly when warm.

I have had problems with the primer bulb losing prime, so I replaced the fuel line and primer bulb. I have also replaced the fuel-water separator filter and the inline filter. I also replaced the plugs. The engine is now idling rough and sometimes stalls. It also has problems accelerating, but once its at full throttle it seems to run great at 5200 rpm.

At this point I'm considering the following 5 repairs:
- inspect/replace fuel tank pickup
- rebuild fuel pump
- adjust the idle mixture screws
- rebuild carburators
- de-carb the engine???

I would greatly appreciately anyone's suggestions or similar experience. I apologize for the lengthy posting.

Thanks

Hi FiveDog, welcome to iboats!

No need to apologize, your post was clear and precise & full of information - perfect!

If it were me, I'd do the de-carb first, then if things didn't improve - carby rebuild.

There is some good information in the FAQ section that you may want to look at also.

Good luck.

Aldo

Sounds like you could have picked up some trash in the carb(s). Take a close look at your plugs and use a pen light look into the combustion chamber, it will show you if your getting too much or not enough fuel in your mixture or the plugs will show if there is a problem with them as well.

Thanks Dunaruna,

I bought a can of Seafoam today. I'll probably use the gas can method with 3 qts of gasoline and a bottle of Seafoam as discussed in teh FAQ section. Unless someone suggests the direct injection to the carburator as being much better?

Thanks again
