Hey everyone, long time no see.
Well today I wanted to start working on the boat again but I realized why I stopped in the first place. The gas tank was a stopping point because I couldnt figure out how to go about fixing it so here is where I come to you guys for help.
I guess I will have to weld it but I cant find anyone willing to mess with it for under what a new gas tank costs. I would like to hear some of your opinions on what I should do.
Is there any kind of pvc or something I can get that is resistant to gas? I figure gas would just eat pvc so I dont want to do that... I just need an angled piece so that I can attach the fuel line to the tank. The fuel line wont bend at an angle (at least I cant do it) and the overhead clearance is so short that I think if I got it to bend it would just pop right off the lip of the gas tank. Im at a loss here guys and open to all suggestions short from "get a new tank".

this is the piece that was just resting on top of the opening on the tank. It looked like it had been cemented around the base and had a rubber thing around it with some clamps to try and keep it from leaking when filled. The first time I put gas in the boat it leaked all over the inside and I had to mop it out.

it looked like this when I first got it except with rubber around it and clamps on either side.

i found the original picture I had of it when I first noticed the leak....

Can you not find an aluminum guy that would weld on a new 90 degree fitting properly? even if you attempted a molded 90 degree hose, the part coming out of tank is not barbed so wont hold securely, may be cheaper to have a new fitting properly welded then buy a new tank. But for sure do not attempt the poor excuse of a jury rig, it is obscenely dangerous!

I have looked around for steel guys but not for aluminum. I will give that a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

I looked up a new tank from moeller and it does not have an angled piece, its just straight up. I assume this is how mine came but the guy couldnt connect the gas line to it so he jerry rigged it. The new tank is $220 , which is ridiculous to me!

I just called the aluminum guy and he said minimum would be $40 bucks. Im going in at 3 to get a quote but first he said rinse it with dish soap and water. I will let you guys know how it goes and hopefully be uploading my new tank setup. Im sure this isnt the last thing I will need to spend money on but I can dream!

that was my bad..did not even realize that was a steel tank when i recommended an Aluminum welder....May be better off getting a new one...Look at craigslist or Ebay, I got a 24 Gallon Aluminum Tank off craigs list with the vent and fill fittings and sender for 50 bucks

lol yea while looking up aluminum welder I came across the guy that did both and I asked if he did marine fuel tanks and said yes bring it in. Figured I didnt need to say anything but... heres clarifying.
Ive looked on craigslist and found one about 100 miles away for 100 bucks. It would be about the same in gas and time to buy a new one.
Im going to try this guy and get a quote so I will let you guys know. I really appreciate the advice and sarcasm above.
That was funny Bond-o - "Ayuh,.... Yer aluminum guy is gonna have a 'ell of a time weldin' that Steel tank,..."

dang , $195 for a 18 gallon is pretty steep. I hope this guy can repair the one I have. Thats almost more then I spent on the boat! haha. Most likely the reason Im having these problems but its my first boat and I kind of deserve it for "spur of the moment" buying.

Ayuh,.... As opposed to, Wastin' 1/2 a day, 'n spendin' $100., Plus expenses,..??

A plastic tank that actually Fits, installed properly is a Done Deal,... a Lifetime investment....

No chance of buyin' somebodyelse's problem....
The Safety factor alone justifies the minor expense...;)

Re: Need help/suggestion on what to do at this point with the gas tank.

Well the tank is toast. He scraped off some rust from the bottom and poked a hole through the deteriorated alumanized (sp?) steel to show me how corroded it was. I might have to save up for a bit to get a new tank but Im thinking even if I do that I will find something else just as bad. (dont know if you saw my original posts about how the carbs are also jerry rigged)
thinking of cutting my losses with this thing and saving up for one that is in good shape.
Im just glad i never took it out and had it leak then start spewing fire from under the deck...
Considering I bartered for the boat I dont think its that big of a loss but it has still put me in a mood....
I realize im still very new to boating and being a boat owner but I love to fish so I thought "hey why not get a boat so I can get a bigger fish". This is exactly why not to do that without checking it inside and out.

Thanks bond-o , JDA1975 and oops! for your input. I appreciate it.

Re: Need help/suggestion on what to do at this point with the gas tank.

If it is the boat you want then do the repairs...will take time and a lot of money, but I have personally found it to be quite fulfilling, I have never even driven a boat...ridden on a few, but otherwise completely new to boating, and boat ownership...my first experience with a boat is buying one, parking it in my carport and tearing it apart to rebuild it. If it a complete loss however, take what is salvageable and find another project, or pay for a seaworthy vessel..both options will take more than a fuel tank would cost, the resto option however can be spread out over a longer period so a little easier on the pocket book
