Need help taking off the lid!

I am working on an old boat. I have it stripped down and I am ready to seperate the hull from the lid so that I can make some necessary repairs. My question is this.... In the splashwell there is a drain hole that goes through the transom. This drain hole has a brass "tube" that is flared on each end (i assume to keep it in place?). I need to know 1) how do i take this out without causing damage and 2)how do I put it back when I put it back together. Thanks in advance for the help. :)

refractory148,

You are going to have to sacrifice that tube(s).

My suggestion would be to bend the flanges, of the tube, in with a screwdriver and then pull it out.

If it has been sealed properly, you are going to make a mess out of the tube. Just bend it up, intil it comes out.

Yeah, you'll have to destroy the brass tube. Its no problem, you can get a replacement from the marine store for a few bucks, cut to length, and flange it in with plenty of sealant. Good luck.

Ahh yes... I remember putting a few of those flare-type in the Marlin boats!

If you can, I'd put in the threaded type:

http://www.iboats.com/products/3/447_garboard_drain_plug.html

If you do, make sure and seal the wood real good before you mount the plug. I always squirted a bunch of silicone around it.

H.

Re: Need help taking off the lid!

thanks everyone. I figured it would have to be pretty much destroyed in order to remove it. I just wanted to be sure. Homerr.....thanks for the link but i dont think that would work too good for me. The drain i was concerned with was in the splashwell and doesnt need to be plugged plus the replacement i will need will have to be at least 2 inches long i beleive. but thanks anyway
