need help tapping hole..

on my 85 hp force the swivel bracket the grease fitting will not stay in anymore so can i buy a bigger grease fitting with threads the other one was a push in type, and drill and tap the same hole? will it break or crack the bracket? thanks rusty

Yes, you certainly can an should drill and tap. The worst thing that could happen is to break the tap in the hole. As long as you use the correct drill size for the size tap, chances are very unlikely that would happen. As far as possibly cracking the pivot bracket while tapping it is just about impossible. I replaced all the press in zerks with threaded one's just a couple of months ago. The thickness of the metal where the zerks are allow for about 3/4" of thread depth. I think the next size up thread wise for zerks is 3/8" x 27. Should some unforeseen circumstance occur causing the new larger hole to become too big for the bigger zerk, no biggie. Just plug the hole and drill a new hole slightly at an angle away from the original hole. Just be sure you use the correct drill size to tap a hole for 1/4" x 27 zerk.
