Need help w/ 86 115

I just purchased a 86 115 inline 6 jet that has been sitting in a shop for the last 2 years. The seller said that he took it to Tom's outboard and was told it needed a new stator. When I went to look at the motor I tried to hook it up to a battery to run a compression test but noticed that the fly wheel bolts were loose. After further inspection I found that the fly wheel was taken off and the stator bolts were loose. Looks like he tried to work on it. Anyway we bolted things down and tried to turn it over by hooking it to a battery and all we got was the starter solenoid click. So we had to perform a compression test by manually turning the fly wheel. Couldn't get much rotation but on all cylinders it was registering around 50 psi. I was wondering where should I start in getting this going. Can you get reliable compression numbers by manually turning the fly wheel or do you need to get the starter to turn the crank and get 3 to 4 compressions per cylinder? I've got a manual coming and am currently cleaning out the spider webs and dust. Thanks in advance.

Hand cranking won't do it on larger motors.

Oiling the cyl's may skew compression #'s, but isn't a bad idea when a motor has been left sitting for so long.

Grab your trusty pair of battery jumper cables and jump directly from a known good battery to the starter.

If it does not spin correctly then R&R the starter.

Download the FREE Outboard Troubleshooting Guide from CDIElectronics.com and DVA test the stator and triggers.

Search iBoats for the thread 'Awakening a Sleeping Outboard'

Follow the advise given for further recommendations to get the motor ready to run.

Thanks for the information. I'll start on it today after I've read through the articles.

OK, so I did a little more reading and found out that it's not a '86; it's a 80-81. I guess you can't always take their word for it.

Anyway I did hook the battery up to the starter and it turned over just fine so I ran a compression test. Here are the numbers:

150-160-150-150-148-?

I could get the guage on the last cylinder because it is tucked down inside the lower cover.

I also checked the stator resistances; Blue- 3900; Blue/white - 500; Red- 190; Red/white - 190. It looks like the stator is bad.

You are inluck with the compression. Very nice numbers and the gaps are within 10% of each other. And usually its the upper cylinders that loose pressure sine the 6th usually get oil from the gas mix and it shouldn't over heat since its at the base of the motor.

I'm replacing a 76 65hp motor, can I use the same controller w/ an adapter plug? The connectors are different but I heard you can buy an adapter. Also since it's been sitting for the past 2 years.. do I need to clean and service the carbs before trying to start it? It doesn't have tilt/trim, can you add this, say from a parts motor that has one.
