Just picked up a 1967 Johnson electric shift today. I thought it was a manual shift, but after a 2 hour drive...I was taking the motor home regardless.
Bought it for $175 (included controls and ignition console).

PO was selling it because his kid burnt out the starter and he didn't want to be bothered with trying to locate another starter. (They had thrown the starter in the trash, so I went dumpster diving and found it. :D

I opened the starter and found that one of the brushes is disconnected(will need to solder it). For the time being I threw in the starter from my other 1967 Johnson 80hp (manual shift)

PO states that he's confident that the motor should start up...since it was run this summer. I'm skeptical, but I've got to give it a try before I start taking parts from it for my other motor.

I don't have a manual yet, so I need some help identifying the wires in the pic and how to connect them the console. The motor is in gear, so I also need to know how to get it in neutral(electric shift)

At minimum I just need to know how to hook enough wires to try and start it.

Yes you do need a manual. The motor will stay in fwd gear until it is running.

check www.maxrules.com for wiring diagram. He has most common wiring diagrams. Also...you need 12V to the shift unit in order to get the motor in neutral. No power defaults the lower unit into forward gear. I dont remember the exact combo for what wires control which. If you do a quick search here I am sure you'll find your answer...or others will chime in with it. Congrats on the new motor...any pics to show us??

Kind of a catch-22 eh? How can I try to get it started while it's IN GEAR? I'm short on time cash right now, so I'm trying to muddle thru this until I can find a manual.

I just need to figure out how to safely try and start the motor, as it is right now.

No volts on green or blue is forward.
12 volts on green only is neutral.
12 volts on both green and blue is reverse.

The gearcase uses Type "C" gear oil, not the normal 85-90W gear oil.

It jumps out of forward gear a couple seconds after its started. It goes to neutral.

You're mistakenly assuming that I'm electrically inclined. :D

I'm clueless when it comes to wiring etc. I was hoping someone could tell me which wires to connect to the ignition switch. Like I said...I have the controls also, which I'm guessing need to be hooked up when I try to start the motor. Unfortunately, the seller was disassembling the controls and iginition console while I was removing the motor, so I didn't get a chance to see how everything was hooked up.

Maybe F_R could be of some help. He might a wiring diagram or can tell you what colors go where. I'll look and see if I have any wiring diagrams in my manual collection that may be of help and post for you

Guys, this a 1967 engine, all electric shifts prior to 1969 defauled to neutral. They used springs and magnets in the gear case. The 1969 electric shift used a gear pump with solenoids, and defauled to forward. It sounds like his gear case is hot wired to forward. Neutral is no voltage, not sure on wiring, I think green is 12 volts to forward and blue is 12 volts to reverse.

Are u saying that you think the motor has been modified by PO to default to 'forward'?

I'm saying you need to get wiring diagram and start chasing wires.
