Need help with 40 HP Johnson

I have a 40 HP Johnson that starts up, but will run for a short time and then stutter and die. If I squeeze the fuel bulb every 5 or 10 seconds the engine will run fine indefinately. I'm thinking the fuel pump. Can anyone please help me with this problem. The fuel pump is of the kind that mixes the oil automatically. I have the oil input blocked to disable it and I mix the gas and oil. If I need to replace the pump, can I put in one that doesn't mix the gas and oil?

Need to know year/model of your Johnson to help you. Sounds like you need to replace the pump for sure.

Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure of the year. The model is J40PLSSM and the serial number is G04837896. Can you tell the year from the serial number?
