when tightening the drive gear to u-joint nut (not the u-joint retainer ring nut), the recommended torque in my repair manual is 85 ft-lbs. This is supposed to set the correct preload on the bearings. When mine is torqued to this setting the bearing races cannot be turned by hand. Is this reasonable? It seems to me that they should turn reasonably easy.

This is a 1989 alpha one gen 1 1.98 ratio outdrive.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Nope,... The Pre-load is determined by the Shims,...
Nut torque just holds it all together...

Actually depends on the gearset used. old type had a small inner spacer, those you just torque the nut down to spec. new type dosent use the inner small spacer and "rolling torque" is adjusted by torquing the nut down slowly. See of you have a inner spacer or not.
the furthest #21 (small ring)and #22(large ring) http://mercstuff.com/fichea.htm

yep, no small spacer is a rolling torque method. just like ya said.
i got lucky and had the spacer.
hope ya got a dial indicator in. lb. torque wrench. they sure are expensive. best i read, ya go to far and ya'll need a press to get the brg. off again too.
mine was with the spacer and when torqued proper it still could be turned, fairly easy by hand.

to elaborate on dubs283 statement. i believe if the bearings have been torqued down once, they are considered used.

if your interested, read s/m 2,4, and 6 about the procedure. there are small differences....

edit, fwiw, read the criteria for brg. replacement too. i went back and forth as to weather to replace mine or not. in the end i did replace them. for blued brgs. i'm not unhappy i did the replacement.

don't need to press apart, just remove the bearing pack/gear assy and with a hammer, strike the backside of the gear sharply to "loosen" the assy, then re-torque

bearings are considered used if SPUN UNDER LOAD one time
