You do not have an old butterfly type choke. You have an enrichner and that is what you hear clicking. When starting the motor the first time for the day, turn the key on and push the key in and hold it for 8-10 seconds, then start the motor bumping the choke as needed until it idles smoothly.

Re: Need help with choke solenoid

I having trouble with my 1992 Mercury 115. When I start the motor the engine sputters while running. If I press the button on the top of the choke solenoid the motor runs fine. Any help would be appreciated.

.

I would "guess" that the motor is running lean and the choke is richening it up to run better OR the choke is not working unless you manually press the button. Some actual troubleshooting tests would help narrow it down.

If the "choke solenoid" is an enrichener valve, I suggest that you follow the troubleshooting guide link in Post #4 above and report the results.

If the "choke solenoid" is an electical activator for a butterfly in the carb barrel, then use an ohmeter/voltmeter to test things and report the results. A wiring diagram (or understand the key/ignition circuit) would be necessary for you to know what to test.
