The unit will work fine as you described with the cables switched to the other side in the box. Sure seems like someone went to a lot of trouble. All they needed was the shift linkage from a 1976 - 78 V6. Then any OMC or aftermarket control would work.

I'm sure it was aggravating for you but it was certainly interesting and confusing at times. It'd be fun to hear what other folks thought who were following along.

This is the most helpful website I have used! I have learned so much about my outboard (1985 70hp Ev.) and outboards in general by following the posts here.

I really appreciate the time you, Dhadley, and the other pros take to help boaters solve engine problems. Your knowledge is amazing and the time you take to share it is very much appreciated.

I guess the "older engine" motor linkage would be an option if it could be found locally.
Picked up seals and o-rings to put this "frankenstien" (good name for the boat and motor, don't you think?) back together. I couldn't tell the parts person the exact year. Had to look at diagrams and your right, 78' seemed to be the closest. Any way a new Teleflex SL-3 shifter is on its way. It'll be good to have all this in the rearview!

Teleflex shifter...... Why not Morse? Or Hynautic? (Never mind -- only the "former" Morse / Hynautic / Aqua Power guys would appreciate that one. Well....maybe not....)

Frankenrude of course! Teleflex people are the only ones that I was able to talk to. Tech support rocks. Anyway I'm still trying to check out an 76'-78' you talked about, on the motor linkage to see if it will reverse the cable for pull to push. I really don't want to buy a second shift controller, but I will if I have to. Don.

And I know what you mean about Morris,besides I have their cables.

Morse Marine NA owned Morse Controls, Hynautic, Aqua Power and later, Sierra. Teleflex bought Morse Marine and the only surviving group was Sierra. All of the Morse Control, Hynautic and Aqua Power folks are now other places. Kind of a left-handed joke about Morse & Hynautic.

Teleflex has some of the best people in the industry. Very nice folks.

As for the linkage all you need is the linkage and stud on the side of a 76 to 78 motor. You'll have to cut the support off the bottom of your intake manifold. The earlier lowers don't use that shaft, they have 2 flat arms with a bolt in the center. The threaded boss for that bolt is (should be) in your block even though it's newer and that boss isn't used.

yes sir, you are spot on. got with a local who has a lot of salvage. New shift rod, motor linkage, then cut away the old motor links (gotta love sawsall) Lower is back together. Now to mount it up and move em out. Thanks again, Don.
