Here's what i have: 9hp Elgin Serial # 5948611065
Model # C571594861
What year is this motor and what other info do you have on this motor, is it a good or bad motor to fix up?
This motor was in a shed for a long time and I recently brought'er out and the motor turned out to run fine but it wouldnt not shift correctly.
After taking it apart i've found the shift cam or shift plunger is worn in the bottom gear housing and is causing the shifting problem.

Where can I get one of these shift cams or shift plungers? This is the only part the motor needs and once I find it I can go fishing! please any help with finding this part would be very very greatly appreciated!!

Thanks alot!

Re: Need Help with Elgin

571 indicates built by West Bend.I found West Bend 9 hp but no 9 Elgin in years 55-65.It appears McCulloch suplied most Elgines beginning in about 59
McCulloch begins with 574.Yours may be a Canadian model.West Bend was purchased by Chrysler circa.65.later became Force.
I don't have part numbers but the shift cam appears very similar on West Bend,Chrysler and Force motors 6hp to 20 hp.up to 89.
My guess is The West Bend and early Chrysler models are probably the same.Perhaps they can help you at the Chrysler Crew Fair winds Marine.

I also suspect it is a Canadian motor. West Bend, Chrysler or whatever you want to call it. They are pretty good motors.

I wouldnt be suprised if it was a Canadian model because I am in Sudbury Ontario
Thanks alot for your help imported and steelespike!

Parts numbers for that shift cam would be great if any1 knows.
Also if anyone knows of any places in Ontario that might have that part. If not than I guess I will order it from wherever it is, IF I can even find it!

No one on this site has an old elgin sitting in the basement with a shift cam in it???? haha

Thanks.

Re: Need Help with Elgin

Also would this motor use a 50:1 oil/gas ratio?

Re: Need Help with Elgin

These motors are listed at 16:1 use TCW3 rated oil.
Don't skimp on the oil as these motors are mostly friction bearings(bushings).

Re: Need Help with Elgin

I found out it is a 1965 Elgin 9hp made by West Bend

weren't most motors around 1965 using 40:1 or 50:1?

Re: Need Help with Elgin

I have it running now and have had it out probably 10 times in the last week.
It pumps lots of water out the hole at idle or high idle but when you give it full throttle the water disappears? does the water go out the underwater exhaust at higher rpm?
I also do not think that it is running full speed, my 1995' 9.9hp goes twice as fast as this 9hp elgin. How can I get her to go WOT? I know the carb is opening fully. IT has a new fuel pump.
Thanks

Re: Need Help with Elgin

Motors running at half speed are usually running on only one cylinder. Remove and ground one spark plug wire and see if it makes a difference

Re: Need Help with Elgin

its running on both cylinders. both are getting fuel and spark and the motor has great compression.
any other ideas? maybe the timing advancer is retarding the motor, when i put the throttle wide open the motor bogs down, but when i turn the throttle back a bit it moves back the timing advancer back and the motor speeds up a bit and smoothes out.

thanks.

Re: Need Help with Elgin

Check your main jet in the carb to ensure it's clean and free of any blockages. Sounds like it's starving for fuel at wide open throttle. Don't run it like this because you will overheat the engine trying to run it in a lean fuel condition.

what about the when the motor stops pissing water out at higher rpms?
Does the water go out the underwater exhaust at higher rpms?
